Connecting the computer to the router with a cable I found was an instant success with three different routers and two different service providers (and several computers).
I fitted a couple of generic wireless adaptors also without incident. Each wireless adaptor arrived with a mini disc and instructions to load the drivers before plugging in the usb adaptor and ten minutes larter I was looking at a list of available wireless networks and being asked to choose one and the enter the password that is written on the underside of the router.
Once I used the Windows wizard to set up a wireless network and similarly had no trouble. I don't think it is necessary to configure the computer to a particular modem and I have not heard others speak of such a thing. Apart from needing the driver for the usb wireless adaptor there it all should happen automatically
Once the driver is installed and the adaptor plugged in, it should be obvious whether it is working because it should detect nearby wireless networks - but it won't connect with any of them unless you click on a particular one. It will only be possible to connect to open wireless or the one or ones you have the password for.
Once the computer is connected it should get the IP address automatically and then connect to the internet..
I have a sneaking suspicion you are thinking too deeply about this. The internet these days is almost foolproof - it has to be for me to get it to work.
Perhaps your operating system is seriously corrupted...
The wireless adapter is used to connect wireless to the internet, You can use it to make your desktop wireless and laptop.
You can connect to the internet as long as you have a wireless router in your place that will supply the wireless signal.
Hi, If your newer usb wireless adaptor does not have the same settings as your router this is the problem you have. First make sure you have installed the cd software that came with the usb adaptor without it plugged in. After that is complete make sure the wireless adaptor is seen by the computer it is attached to. Then you need to open the settings of the usb adaptor and set it up same as your router's settings. This includes the WEP security password if you use it.
Good Luck.
No you do not, but you do need some form of a wireless router to make that Internet connection wireless. Depending on which modem you have that connects to the Internet, you might already have a wireless router.
ensure that a wireless connection is created in control panel on the pc, it may not even be attempting to connect
ensure that the router wireless is turned ON, it may have been turned off as a security measure when no wireless pcs were used
The security settings on the adaptor may be set to the office network and locked wep password at home is different or not enabled, so the secured adaptor will not connect.
make any changes from a cable connected pc (no chance of data loss) access the routers settings page and check the settings, then ensure the adaptor rom if present is set to the same settings
The network you're attempting to connect to is probably secured by wireless encryption.
