During post I get immediately the message "104 unsupported device". My BIOS is Version 16 in my Compaq 6710b nootebook.
My suggestion would be remove the 512AN_MMW, then update the BIOS.
The latest BIOS is 20, once you update the BIOS install the 512AN and see if it solves the issue.
Thanks Pete,
Thanks Pete, I have upgrade now my BIOS to version 20. Unfortunately that still doesnot recognize this mini-PCI WiFi card. It could of course also be THIS card, however the 'seller' told me it should be correct, but of course no guarantee that it would work for/in my Compaq notebook. I have to look further.
Herman,
Here is a link that might solve your issue.http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Tec...
Pete, you are the MAN!

Thans Joe, however: The first links only address the confirmity and the others point to external cards. I was looking to upgrade my internal miniPCI one from 54Mbps to 300Mbps. Sofar no luck.
The first link details Intel 512AN_MMW -> Intel, for one. For two it is to show you to go to the Intel Download Center. Left side -> Search for Drivers, in blue. My thinking was you do not have the correct driver. Actually didn't get off my keister to look, and see what was available. I figure I'll let you do some research. Increases knowledge. BIOS update? I SHY away from advising this procedure because of One: Don't know your skills. Two: One mistake and you have an expensive conversation piece, "Oh that? I keep it around. Tried to update the BIOS, but the power went off, and I didn't have Backup power. What? NO, I didn't save the original BIOS to go back to. It DID ask me though. Looks pretty good with a rubber tree on it, huh?" YOU just think I'm kidding. If you knew about trying a BIOS update, you would have performed it already. If it were I giving you the advice, you would have been warned on what the possible outcome is, IF a mistake is made. IMHO pulling the USB Wireless adapter out of the laptop case, and plugging it in each time you use the laptop, was a better solution that possibly turning the laptop into a doorstop. I updated the BIOS already to its latest version (F20). And it looks a hardware/incompatibilty problem to me because immediately after POSTing it detects that this card is not supported. How can I load any driver if the hardware is not accepted in the first place??
Like to post back, but Comment isn't working. Test
Hmmm. Let's experiment; A) Driver: A small piece of software that allows the Operating System to communicate with a device. O/S wasn't stated (Windows version), device is Intel 512AN_MMW. (Intel Wireless 5100) B) When a new device is installed, Windows will 'break it's neck' to find suitable drivers. If THE driver/s are not there, Windows will match up one of it's THOUSANDS of generic drivers. This = NO. The correct procedure is to have Windows running, then download AND install the driver. Then ALL power removed, Anti-Static Precautions FOLLOWED, and physically install the device. (Intel 512AN_MMW module)
I see I cannot post a link. Cool(?) Okay; A) What wireless driver did you download? Yes. I need the version number. URL of driver download page would be better. Paste in a Comment. Do not need direct link. Also what method did you use to download AND install? Plus, I believe you have a Black - Wireless Antenna wire, and a White - Wireless Antenna wire. Which one did you connect to the Main terminal on the wireless module? No,....just don't want to 'Leave any stone unturned. I have more......
Driver not installed first, the wireless module will NOT be recognized. Why? Driver: Small piece of software that allows the Operating System to communicate with a device. Point? ALL power removed, Anti-Static Precautions followed; press the Power On button in for a count of 10 seconds. Removes all residual power. Now reinstall all power. [Battery, THEN AC adapter {Charger}, then connect AC adapter TO power ] Turn the laptop on. You'll probably get a pop-up saying wireless connectivity is disabled. Now download AND install THE wireless driver. Driver installed DO NOT restart your computer if asked. Close all windows, go back to your desktop screen. Turn Windows off normally. (Turn the computer off) Remove ALL power. Follow Anti-Static Precautions. Physically re-install the Intel 512AN_MMW wireless module. Make sure the Wireless Antenna wires are connected, and correctly. Close the bay door. Reinstall power. Tell me what happens in a Comment.
The motherboard chipset is an Intel Mobile 965GM. The Northbridge chip, Intel part number is Intel 82965GM. The code name for the Southbridge chip is Intel ICH8-M, or just Intel ICH8M. The Intel part number for the ICH8 is Intel 81801HM. The Southbridge chip of the motherboard chipset, handles the Slower capabilities of a computer. Ethernet and WiFi are handled by the Southbridge chip. The Intel 82810HM will support ('Handle') an Intel Wireless 5100 wireless module. (Intel 512AN_MMW wireless module. Same/same)
