Have the same problem.  This is what I have found in trying to solve the problem.  It appears that it is a tracking problem and it appears that either your new "used" camera has the problem or your original camera had the problem.
A simple test would be to take another camcorder and see if the tapes play. If they do, and a recently recorded tape DOES NOT, you may just need to get another camera. Or, see if the camera can be re-tracked at a repair shop. However, be sure you have copies of your most recent tapes recorded with the bad tracking

Playback 8mm camcorder tape fuzzy

8 mm and the newer super 8 mm video tapes are different. You can't use super 8 mm in old player. And old tapes won't play well in new super 8 mm players. Like Sony!

I have a really old Canovision8, E40, 8mm camcorder that doesn't work anymore. What's the best solution to convert the tapes to DVD or to the computer?

Hi,
You need Hi-8 camcorder/ Hi-8 player to playback your old Video-8 tapes, hook that camcorder/ player with DVD Recorder, play video-8 tapes and burn DVDs directly.

Cannot play them

Oh boy the 8mm tape will work in a hi 8 playback but the resolution will be just 8mm
Just the same if you have hi 8mm tapes you can record on then with regular 8mm cameras.

Mode for playback of older 8mm tapes using Sony DCR-TRV730 ?

In 1990s Sony camcorder records movie in analog format so playing in digital camcorder like DCR-TRV730 doesn't mean it will be converted in digital format and you can not import file in PC for editing purpose. You will get analog signal while playing back old cassettes.

Regarding SP, LP speed, its decided at time of recording. Camera sens SP or LP automatically in playback and set itself accordingly.

If you want to convert old cassettes into digital format, connect our camcorder to DVD recorder and burn DVD which is digital format, copy DVD files in to PC and do desired editing.

SONY MP 120 8mm video cassette

Problem is dirty / clogged video head of v-8 player or camcorder what ever you are using for playback. Use good quality video head cleaning cassette for head cleaning.
Please check tapes on another camcorder as tapes seems OK.

Not reading Hi8 tapes

Fidus, I am not sure where you are located but the camcorder you're trying to use now is a PAL version of Sony's 8mm camcorder. If the tapes you recorded earlier were recorded in D8 (digital 8) or 8mm/Hi8 format NTSC, they will not play correctly in this unit. The NTSC and PAL formats are different and not compatible. Hope this helps you. Joe Weibel customelectronics.org
