If you did see the igniter lighting in the oven then it leads me to think that if your oven has digital controls and temperature setting that the problem may be in that area. Would you open the door and try to read the complete numbers so I will be looking for the correct parts breakdown. I think you listed GE XL44 gas oven. I need some numbers like this to get on the right print. I will need a number like (JGS968BEK1BB) for example. The gas will not turn on in oven area unless the igniter lights. If the thermostat is broken it will not tell the gas valve to open and allow gas to come into oven area to light. Let again know what you find and I will try to assist you on this. Thanks, Sea Breeze
Check to see if the broil feature works. The electric igniter must stay on in the oven bottom lower or the upper broiler. The igniter is hard to see with the cover on the bottom and top. If the igniter is not lighting in the section that you have the cover off, the gas will not stay on. Igniters are very fragile so use care when removing and installing. Do not turn the gas on high with the covers off or you may have a flash fire. Just long enough to view them working properly. If bake or broil feature does not work, it is possibly the thermostat probe on inside wall of oven, if that is bad it should turn the gas off and not stick with gas setting high or ever on. Another feature that may cause a problem is timed cook being set on some models. The gas valve is located when bottom drawer is removed and you look inside for the valve and a lever that could have been turned off during cleaning that area. The only other cause is the gas valve is boken, or no elecric power to igniter. I hope this helps. Let me know what you find, Thanks Sea Breeze
The answer to where the thermostat is located. The probe is located inside oven and it has a copper tube that go through oven wall and then mounts to back of the temperature or bake/broil knobs. I know this is difficult to solve but following this series of steps will help you resolve the problem. Let me know if this is helping you, I really would like to get this oven working correctly for you. ..Sea Breeze

Hi ... my stove does not heat up...I think the ignitor is not lighting up at all.. I tried to run the self cleaning option and stopped the cycle in the middle..it was heating then... now its not heating up at all... could this be the reason why its not working? how can I fix it.....
I am going though the same problem and you need to get a clip on amp meter and check that the wire leading to the gas valve from the ignitor is showing 3.2 to 3.6 amps flowing when the bake procedure is running. It is very simple to test, you remove the bottom drawer of the oven and clip the meter around the wire, turn on the oven and watch the meter reading go up. My meter rose to 2.5 amps which is not enough to cause the gas valve to open and let the gas flow.My ignitor does glow very bright and very hot but it is not letting the proper amps flow though the circiut.I hear this is the a common problem and easy to fix by replacing the ignitor. I also hear that there are less expensive options than the ge models available. Going shopping for those now. Good luck.
Hi,
The ignitor is not working right and is going bad....

Appreciate your help Sea Breeze...I have already checked the manual...to no avail. Do you think the glow bar or bake valve has gone bad?...need to be .replaced
Sea Breeze ....Indeed my range is an GE XL44 Model # JGBS23BEA6WH. It uses standard knobs...the only digital item is the clock and timer. When the knob is turned on the Igniter/Glow bar turns on...stays red hot but the gas does not flow. The stove works just fine. It is puzzling...I am not sure where the thermostat is located (possibly behind the oven knob?)....I could locate the Norton ignitor and the valve. I think we are getting somewhere....
please follow-up. Thank you.
Sea Breeze...I will spend the next couple of days, after I come back from work, exploring my range. I appreciate your time. Whether I am successful or not I will let you know. Many Thanks. Al
I have a GE xl44 range. The stove works great, but the oven will not always light. Sometimes I can manually light it, but sometimes it lights by itself. The light glows in the back but the pilot light doesn't light. I had the gas company come out and they said that my gas valve is clogged. What does this mean?
I had a similar problem...and I needed to thank Seabreeze for his recommendation. I replace the ignitor ($67) and the gas stove has been back in operation the past three weeks with no problem. I saved myself at least $200 extra for troubleshooting and labor.
Seabreeze is the best in the business.
Now I have top deal with another problem with a leaky gas water heater....leaking from the bottom ( 1 gal a day ). That one might be tougher than the GE oven. I welcome any suggestions.
