How do i change the number of rings before it goes to answering machine. We would like 5 rings instead of 3. Also sometimes when people call in it says our system is not set up yet.

Make sure the answering system is ON.
Press flash/answerer/call waiting button on the handset to enter answerer remote mode.
Press key [9] to enter Ring to Answer menu on handset.
Use the CALLER ID-VOLUME (up/down-arrow) button to choose 5 rings.

You can download the manual here.

Set number of rings

If you have the Digital Answerer in White with Extended Recording Time TAD-3808, then slide the Ring Select switch on the right side of the unit to the desired number of rings. TS = toll saver and answers after 2 rings if there are new messages; , otherwise, it will answer after 4 rings.

All of the Radio Shack answering machne manuals can be accessed here: http://support.radioshack.com/productinfo/ProductResults.asp?Name=Telephone_Answering_Devices&ID=002004 .

For the 3808, see http://support.radioshack.com/productinfo/DocumentResults.asp?sku_id=43-3808&Name=Telephone%20Answering%20Devices&Reuse=N for the manuals.

I hope this helps.

NOTE: Language can only be set when the user is in physical access of the unit. When you are running in Remote Access mode, the language cannot be changed and will remain in the language you’ve previously set.10
Setting the Time/Day : This setting allows you to set the current time and day for the Time/Day stamp attached to each message.

Wanted to know if i can check messages by calling in

CLICK HERE for the user manual.

The following is on Page 19....

REMOTE ACCESS
You can access your answerer from any touch-tone phone
by entering your 4-digit security code (the default security
code is 0123). The remote functions do not work with rotary
or push-button pulse-dialing phones. You can cut out the
wallet-size remote card near the back of the User’s Guide
so you know the touch-tone commands when you're
picking up messages from another location.
To access your answerer:
1. Call your telephone number.
2. After you hear the beep that follows the greeting,
enter your 4-digit security code. To bypass the
greeting, you can enter your 4-digit security code at
any time while the greeting is playing.
3. The unit plays the remote menu after the correct
security code has been entered. Menu selections can
be made at any time while the menu is playing.

NOTE: The unit answers on the 10th ring when it is
turned off or the memory is full. To access the
answerer, enter the 4-digit security code after the
beep. If memory is full, play messages and erase
some of them to restore memory. If the answerer is
off, press 2 to turn it on.
NOTE: After the unit plays the remote menu, it will
wait several seconds for a command, then disconnect

Cordless Phone

You did record a message on the answerer, didn't you? Mine displayed that until I recorded the outgoing message for the answerer. You do not need any service from your phone provider. The answerer in the base unit simply records the caller's message when you don't answer after a set number of rings. The manual tells you how to name the handset, which is a nice feature if you don't wish to use "unit 1, unit 2, etc".
