Insert a DVD disc into the DVD drive.
Open My Computer then right click on the DVD drive (it maybe the D drive) - click on Properties - then click on Autoplay..

SOURCE: slow processing and start up on thinkpad r61

sounds like you have too much data on your hard drive and possibly too much stuff starting up with your computer so use jkdefrag, msconfig, startup control panel and ccleaner to clear and clean up the data on your laptops hard drive.

Use ccleaner first which you can get here
and then defrag your hard drive afterwards using
jkdefrag which is here

msconfig you can access by going to start --> run and type msconfig and press enter or click on ok and then go to the startup tab and stop things running that you dont need to run although using startup control panel which is here would be a lot easier and better as you can check the run keys in the registry as well as the startup and run once keys and make sure only the things you need to run at startup are actually booting up.

Once you have done that see if it is any better and post back

SOURCE: Dear There, I have Lenovo ThinkPad

Two things. You might have a problem with the inverter or with the backlight lamp.
You need to open your Laptop Screen. Normally the screws are hiding underneath the rubber stops. It would be better if you can find a LCD disassembly manual for your laptop else just write down what and account everything that you do. Check for the Fluorescent like lamp if its burnt out. If it is then you need to replace that. If not, then you need to replace the Inverter(a long rectangular shaped circuit board. Normally it is just at the bottom of the LCD screen.) Note the product code written on the inverter and order it. This should fix that problem.

How to update IBM Thinkpad T40?

It\'s a bit old to play with but still a workable computer. Find a local source or the internet and upgrade the memory to 2gb or go for 8gb if you can find them cheap. Turn it over and you\'ll see a cover with "MEM" on it. That\'s where you would replace the memory. The memory in it will give you an idea of type that will work in it. Replace hard drive with as large as you can get (refurbished is fine). Again, you don\'t want to put a lot of money in an older laptop. T40 has 1 screw on under side you remove and the whole drive and carrier will come out. 2 screws on each side of carrier and drive can be switched out and re-inserted into laptop. I would load windows 7 on it. By replacing the hard drive it will be easier to reload new operating system. Just go with Straight Windows 7. Download all drivers from windows. This might take 3-4 hours but the unit will run better with less IBM software running on it. If the network driver doesn\'t work to download updates. Buy a cheap USB wireless adapter to get up and running. After all of the Win 7 updates are installed you should have wireless and Ethernet working. If not you\'ll need to go to IBM/Lenovo site and download Drivers that might be missing. You can download all drivers from IBM but then you get all the stuff that you don\'t need.

Good luck.

Hi there, My thinkpad T400's screen and indicators (hard drive, wireless etc) are not on, while the computer supposes to be running (it does make some noise tho). What could be the problem? Thanks

Take out the battery, memory, hard drive, and DVD drive. See:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-71461

for instructions.

With those items removed, connect the system to power and see if anything changes. If there is still no sound and no lights, the system needs to go in for service.

If you get some beeps, try adding one stick of memory back in. If there's no change, try the other stick (if you have one).

If the situation improves, start adding devices back one at a time.

How do I replace a key that fell off my Lenova T400 Thinkpad?

Only way is to find another keyboard that is broke and take the key off of that and put it on yours. Otherwise you have to buy another keyboard.

Actually this Ebay seller sells keys for IBM keyboards so you wouldn't have to buy the whole keyboard:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290422834687&rvr_id=&crlp=1_263602_263622&UA=%3F*F%3F&GUID=6bb4fc401280a0366331b311ffc5474d&itemid=290422834687&ff4=263602_263622

Or you can buy a whole new keyboard here:
http://www.codemicro.com/store/product/42T406602/New

You have at least a couple of options.

I have a t400 lenovo and I can't seem to hear any sound or be able to adjust the sound or mut. I could at one time, but now nothing

goto control panel > device manager > sound and audio devices and check for the device status.... if its not working properly the you need to reinstall the driver, this will fix the issue.... or please make sure that did you removed any windows components from add/remove programs.... if so, then do that again and enable all windows components, in that case it may ask you to insert the windows cd/dvd in the cd/dvd drive.....

IBM ThinkPad R40 Intel Centrino Upgrade to Intel Core 2 Duo?

According to system specs your system is not compatible with the Core 2 Duo or Centrino Core 2 Duo. To upgrade to those chips you would need to replace the motherboard with one capable of running those chips. If you decided to do that you would almost surely need new RAM as newer boards use newer technology. By the time you did this the upgrade would not be cost effective. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.
