I have been having the same problem. Microsoft has beenutterly useless for help on this one. If I insert a blank CD, and sometimesDVD, the moment the CD/DVD RW drawer closes and the disk starts to spin thecomputer crashes, (BSOD.)

Have eliminated power, driver and anti-virus softwareissues. It’s clearly not the burner software since the computer never gets thatfar in the cycle.

I can say that it started after a series of Microsoft“updates”, though I haven’t been able to determine which ones. (Prior tosetting the update feature to “Auto” I never had the problem.) Have also triedreformatting and reloading the OS and my other software. The results are stillthe same.

On another note update KB951748 was another example ofMicrosoft quality engineering. Completely crashed Internet connectivity. Phonecall to Microsoft for help got this response; “Just go on the Internet and getthe next update from our web site.” Me; “ I can’t go on the Internet becausethe update has crashed my Internet connection.” Microsoft; “Well, that’s aconnectivity problem. We can’t help you with connectivity problems.”

Either the DVD software is bad,in which case you should delete it and reinstall it. Or the CD/DVD player has something wrong with it. The first is the most likely.

Roxi and Nero are two examples of DVD buring software. DVD software is not and never was part of windows. But if the CD also does not work and you have the same type of disks that always worked before, then I wouldl suspect that the DVD /CD burner went bad. I used then a lot and I have replaced about ne a year for the last 5 years on my own PC computer.  PS I believe that the driver for the CD burner is part of windows. Not positive

If the computer is starting and running ok when you start it w/o the cd disk then try restoring the computer to the earliest date before this started happening.
START _ HELP AND SUPPORT _ RESTORE _ Restore computer to an earlier date.

If this does not fix the problem then you will know that is is not a software problem but a cd/dvd hardware problem. Remove and replace the player.

two solutions:
1-boot your windows from "Safe Mode". then download and install a driver for your DVD Drive.

When I start my macbook a blue screen appears with a folder with a ? mark in it flashing

That message means that it can't find the start up folder and or your hard drive has crashed.

If you insert your OS disk or a copy of Disk Warrior you can boot to the cd / dvd by holding down the "C" key and then powering up the Macbook.

Let me know if you have that OS cd and then we'll go from there.

With blank DVD/CD computer crashes

My computer used to do this until I installed more RAM. Seems those video writing programs want to hog all the system RAM which causes the crash. I have at least 1 GB RAM minimum in all my computers. Hope this helps.

DVD TSST Corp CD/DVDW TS-H552B. Computer crash using DVD+R

I tried using a blank DVD+R 16X and as soon as I closed the DVD drawer the computer crashed. No warning, no blue screen just straight to a restart. If I left the DVD in it cycled through back to a restart.
I tried the latest firmware from Samsung but it still happened S10.
I then tried an HP firmware update HP13 from their driver update page and all is well.

Sony DRU-840a DVD-RW shuts down PC when blank discs are inserted.

I have the same problem with my sony so i tried various liton burners and they did they did the same blue screens. I tried Dell for the suggested BIOS up date but their latest was older than the one I had so I didn't install it. I suspect the problem is more with Nero than anything else.

Problems recording DVD

It sounds to me like you are having driver or software trouble/conflicts with CD/DVD monitoring programs. After booting, look in the lower right hand corner and see if there are any icons like DISK AT ONCE or VIRTUAL DISK MONITOR running. If you have any programs running in the system tray, it is probably that which is causing the problems.

If worse comes to worse, go into CONTROL PANEL, ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS and then remove any program that involves CD or DVD writing, such as ROXIO, NERO, SONIC, any of these. After removal, reboot, and then once everything is up and running try inserting a blank DVD. If it runs correctly (should show a blank disk or ask you what you want to do with a blank disk), then it was a software driver problem. Once fixed, you can either reinstall your old CD/DVD writing management program (like Nero or Roxio), or try a more stable and higher quality alternative (like the excellent, and free, DEEPBURNER), which is less likely to have driver/software problems.

Good luck...

CD burner and possibly the CD Drive

Try a different blank CD, I have thrown out many new blank CD's and DVD"s, and for some reason one will work and the next won't.
