I have a HP Pavilion dv2000, the CD-R/DVD tray doesn't open or work. The light doesn't come on at all. I can manually open it with a paper clip, but when I put a CD or DVD inside, nothing happens.
You can do is reseat the power connector at the back of the drive if that doesnt work ... change the power connector u may have an extra in the tower and than try ... if that doesnt work u have a faulty drive

CD/DVD Drive Tray problems There are two ways to open the CD/DVD drive door if the button just below the drive tray does not work. Go to My Computer and right click on the drive and click on Eject. If this does not work then you can manually open the CD/DVD drive tray by - Straighten a paper clip and gently insert it into a tiny hole below the drive tray next to the Eject button. Push the paper clip gently until the drive tray pops out, then pull the tray until it is fully out, then you can remove the CD/DVD disc. If you still having problem opening with the Eject button, then the CD/DVD drive is faulty and needs replacing.
turn on the unit and then tried to press the play button while the cd tray is in place. if doesn't work, unplug the dvd player then open the cover to access the internal part. look for a broken limit switch for cd tray mechanical assembly or check weather the cd not in proper place in the tray that is why an error occur.

Premature failure of this drive appears to be a widespread issue. I have joined in a support thread at HP and encourage you to do the same: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/CD-DVD/Hp-dvd-1040i-Disk-tray-doesn-t-open-half-the-time/m-p/347544#M1980
The fact is *********** board is very likely the matter. See all devices that do not need the motherboard to respond are all working (cd/dvd tray opens and closes, fans are on etc). On the other hand all devices that need the motherboard to respond are not working (keyboard, optical mouse, etc). It is more or less conclusive.
Turn off the computer and then use the paper clip to open the DVD tray.
If this doesn't work, then something is jaming and stopping the tray from opening. In this case, remove the DVD drive and dismantle the drive (ie. remove the metal cover to reveal the internal components and remove the CD ot DVD disc.
If nothing works the the DVD drive is faulty and needs to be replaced, these drives are not expensive.
Remove the Phillips PM2.5x7.0 screw (1) that secures the optical drive to the computer
Insert a thin tool, such as a paper clip, into the media tray release hole (2). (The optical drive media tray release from the optical drive)
Use the media tray frame to slide the optical drive (3) to the left.
Remove the optical drive.
