I have a 99 Pontiac Grand Prix, I had the water pump replaced last week and a oil change a week or two before that. however the past couple of days the low oil light would come on and i would check the oil and see that its low so I added 3 quarts two days ago and the oil light went off. Today the low oil and coolants both came on (which I also added last week) so I added coolant and another 3 quarts of oil. After that the low oil light would come on and go off after i turn the car off and start it back up. And when the low oil light is not on the oil pan light and check gauges light on the window display would come on and off as im driving. I dont kow if its a short with that or what, but I am more concerned with why my car is burning up oil?
Nowdays 1 Qt. in 3000 miles, really isn't that bad, even some new vehicles claim that's normal. I know with my current vehicles, both at approx. 150,000-160,000 miles, they won't use any for first while after an oil change, but then after mileage starts adding up again, they start to use a little, approx.I Qt, every 1000 miles or so, until it's changed again. I've switched to the high mileage oil, just for piece of mind, as they say it revives seals, and has added protection for the higher mileage engines. This time around I'm thinking of adding "Lucas" & see how it works, as I've heard some pretty good reports on it, just to see if it will prolong that oil breakdown, at mid change.

I do not smell burning oil, nor is there any leaks that underneath the car (which i frequently check for). The only oil put into my car is the kind that is supposed to go in. The car runs perfectly fine no sputtering, weird noises, or leaks, only issue is the low oil light and the oil pan light and check gauges light (and of course the service engine light).
I have not gone back to them yet but was planning on going tomorrow to get a oil change, oil filter change and air filter change. I was thinking it might be a filter problem or a drain plug leak as well. What do you think the odds of that being the problem?
Well this problem has never happened before, there is approx 144k miles on the car. Maybe in the last 20k miles i have noticed that before 3k miles we would need to add a quart of oil. So do you think its just time to start using high performance oil? I do drive a lot for work. Do you think that might be the problem? I will be getting an oil change regardless.
Come to find out it was the Oil Sender that had a crack. When the car was off there was no leak, however when the car was on oil was flowing out like a water faucet. I thought you might be interested in hearing what happened. Thank you very much for your help!
Well, if there's no visible leaks, and PCV is working as it should , there's only one other place I can think of right now, but it just doesn't make sense. I will tell you this though, I had a vehicle at one time that I sold to a relative, who had oil changed in it, and all of a sudden it started using oil like crazy, about a quart every 50 miles. I swore by Castrol & that's all I ever used in it. The garage, topped it up, with their brand, just in case, checked filter, & drain plug, and sent her down the road. Still same, 1 qt. every 40-50 miles. I changed oil & filter & replaced oil with castrol, and problem was solved. No more oil disappearing. It has happened before to others I know too.
Do you smell burning oil when in or out of the car after a drive? Do you have any idea if they changed grade or brand name of oil that you usually use? No sign of leaks underneath car, dripping on ground? Could be an oil filter leak, or drain plug leak. Have you gone back & spoke to them about it yet?
