Copies fade in and out horizontally

Prints copies like varying gradients of black and white. The top of the copied paper will have black text that grows lighter and darker throughout the page. It does this before it hits the fusing unit so I'm guessing optics or something beyond my comprehension. Any tips, please help!

Toner cartridge has been changed a few times with no luck. Took a flash light to the mirror and lens with no noticeable problems. I'll try cleaning them as you posted and will let you know if that helps! I also made a copy 1/2 way to see if it was the fusing unit, but it is not because the ink was still fading in and out. Thanks for your help!

One of 2 things likely...It could be as simple as your toner cartridge. Do you have another to try?? Otherwise it should be an optics problem. I've only worked on a couple of these, so i can't remember exactly, but basically you want to get the top scanner glass out. I think you have to remove one of the end panels, and perhaps the top back panel. should be fairly obvious when looking at it, the glass, should slide out the end (power should be "OFF" by the way), slide the scanner to the right and clean the mirrors, and bulb, and then clean the glass. replace and check.
Hope this helps.

Brother MFC-440CN - print quality terrible, almost non-existent in spite of many cleaning operations.

It sounds like the printhead needs to be replaced. Brother may cover the cost of repair if you call them at 877-276-8437 and tell them the prints are "missing black ink". Very common problem that a new printhead should fix.

Hi, did you place paper in tray also horizontal? the paper in tray and on glass must be horizontal if you want to copy A4R size.

DO NOT forget to adjust the blue paper size indicator on paper tray to A4R also.

Also under user mode, under copy sett. you can find option for auto rotate, so copier will adjust size automaticaly.

My kodak 5100 printer is having problems printing black text

Clean the printhead, then print a demo sheet.
  1. Verify that inkjet paper is loaded in the paper trays.
  2. On your desktop, start the KODAK All-in-One Home Center, then select the Help [?] icon.
  3. From the Help menu, select Maintenance, then select Printhead Cleaning. The On/Off light flashes green during the cleaning procedure.
  4. When the On/Off light glows a steady green, press Photo and Copy simultaneously to print a demo sheet.
If the Demo print is bad- IE: no black, blurry print etc., then you may need to replace the printhead:

Error 9-363

NOTE: The problem occurs because of the trickle development system in the machine, making extended lengths of black and white copies / prints does not allow the black developer housing to purge itself of excess waste Toner (Dry Ink) and Developer. There are two solutions for the problem:
  • Make 1,000 copies / prints of a black and white job, then make 150 copies / prints of full color. Continue making 1,000 copies / prints of the black and white job, then 150 full color, and so on, until the entire black and white job is complete.
  • Make extended jobs in groups of 100 by making 100 copies / prints of the black and white job, then allowing the machine to cycle down (return to 'Ready') and making the next 100 copies / prints. Continue in this pattern until the entire black and white job is complete.
NOTE: The above solutions are based on jobs using 8.5 x 11 inch paper, single sided, with no more than 28% coverage.
