The technique I always used to identify where such a noise was coming from was to use a very long screwdriver (2 feet long), while the engine is running. CAREFULLY touch the screwdriver end to each pulley or other object under the hood, and put your ear to the handle. The device making the noise will become very clear.
It could be AC pump/clutch, alternator, water pump, power steering pump, etc.
when you changed the hub assembly did it come with a new wheel bearing? jack the vehicle up and move the tire up and down and then side to side and check and hear for play on parts if there is play in something then that is your problem to me it sounds like your inner tie rods does it pop on both ends ?
I have a 2007 Saturn Aura with 3.6 L engine. Had it since new (now at 55,000mi) Here is what I found that may be what you are experiencing. Particularly in cold weather, after about 5 minutes of running a sharp "pop" occurs. Usually I just have one loud pop. I believe this is something in the exhaust system that expands and pops much like a cookie sheet put into the oven. As best I can tell, this is a harmless noise. As the car has gotten older it does this less frequently. Dave K.
It sounds like you broke a Constant Velocity joint (CV Joint). The pop was probably the joint breaking. When you put it in gear it's just spinning. Think of one of your hands as the transmission. Hold a pencil that would be the CV Joint(s) and axle, and use the other hand to hold the other end of the pencil. That's the front hub (part that makes the wheel turn). So you have ...hand, pencil...hand = trans, axle... wheel. If you hold the pencil firmly with both hands, and spin the pencil with one, both hands still move.
If the pencil breaks...the one not spinning does nothing.
So...The transmission is trying to make the van go, but the cv joint is broken, so the wheels aren't spinning. When you put the van in park, the transmission doesn't know the vans not moving. Therefore it's making the same noise as if you put the van in park while driving. If you must start the van and put it in gear to see if the driver's or passenger's axle is just spinning. Shut the van off, wait a minute for the axle shaft to stop spinning, and then put it in park.
It could just be the heat shield around your exhaust expanding and contracting again when your engine cools down. Sounds like a tin can type of popping noise?? If it is that's the heat sheild from the engine that protect's the spark plug wire and around under the truck cabin. Good luck and hope you find where the noise is coming from.
