"Ntldr is missing press cntrl alt delete to restart"My problem is similar and also very different than everyones. When I try to use a recovery cd or any cd in this matter, none of them are detected or run everytime I press cntrl alt del. Keeps going in circles and driving me nuts!

Sure you can just re-install XP, but you will loose all of your documents and programs.
That's simple and if you have not installed anything - you can go that way.

If you want to keep everything on your laptop, you just need to repair the existing Windows installation.

This is how you do it:

  1. You have to boot form your Windows CD.
  2. In the setup screen press "Enter" ("setup WIndows now...").
  3. Important!!! - do NOT choose the Recovery Console by pressing "R"!
  4. Agree to the EULA by pressing F8.
  5. In the next window, which shows existing Windows installations, choose the repair option by pressing "R" and let it replace your corrupt NTLDR file.
If the automatic repair doen't work, then you have to copy the file manually to your C: drive.
  1. Boot from your Windows CD.
  2. Enter Windows Recovery Console (see above and press "R" in the first screen.
  3. At the command prompt, assuming drive D refers to your CD Drive, type in the following and hit "Enter" after each line:
    • copy D:\i386\ntldr C:\
    • copy D:\i386\ntdetect.com C:\
  4. Press "Y" (for "yes") when prompted to overwrite any existing file.
  5. Restart the computer
This way you keep whatever is on your computer and just replace the damaged file.

Hi

The start up files are missing or corrupt. to repair this you need the windows installation cd. you could use the repair console to try fixing the boot. but better results you would get by doing a repair installation of windows.

Your operating system is corrupt. You need to reinstall the operating system.

Thanks and please take a moment to give this solution a rating of fixya, even if it's not what you wanted to hear. Thanks :c)

And those comments are true; however averatec as with most manufacturers don't ship with a windows xp cd and most consumers don't have a windows xp oem cd to perform the repair with. But I should have made mention of that in case you do.

My Averatec 3200 series won't boot up. It says "NTLDR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" Pressing ctrl+alt+del doesn't help. What, if anything can I do?

The NTLDR is the boot loader of Windows - if it's missing the OS can't boot. The only reliable and easy way to fix that is to do a Repair install - everything will be kept and the missing files reloaded.
