The IA5823 is not an answering machine. It will work with most telephone service providers' voice mail systems. You'll need to refer to the instructions from your service provider.

This model of phone does not have voicemail so you must be getting the service from another provider. The Message Waiting Indicator (MWI) is triggered by a message from the voicemail provider. If you are using a provider other then the company that provides the dialtone on your phone it is unlikely that company will be able to provide the MWI message. If you do have Voicemail with the provider of your dialtone then call and make sure they have it set up for activating you message waiting indicator there is the visual option that uses the lights on your phone and the LCD display and there is the audible option that provides a stutter dialtone when you go offhook. Some companies do both by default you will want to make sure they are providing the visual MWI alert. Yes, I have had nothing but trouble with my V-Tech ia5823.
Slow to dial, dropping out going calls and now the base light is flashing at a rapid pace and will not charge the handset.
I want to return it to Wal-Mart but have misplaced the recepit.
I will never buy another V-Tech..Uniden is the way to go!
