Laptop screen is very dark

The screen on my IBM (made before Lenovo) X41 laptop is really dark when I start it up, and you can see a very faint image of the desktop on the screen. There isn't anything wrong with the backlight, because if I wait about 10-12 minutes after startup, the backlight will come on. My computer's hard drive recently had to be wiped completely because of a virus that I could not get rid of by any other means.
Is there a driver that I could install to fix this, or does something else need to be repaired?

Cant turn brightness up on screen

IS the screen really dark and can you see a "ghost image" when you tilt the laptop back, looking along the edges? (from an acute angle)
IF you do see a faint image, your laptop screen's power inverter may be bad, or the screen's "back light" may be bad... Take it to a shop to have them verify this issue. Hope this helps.

I have lenovo g550...my screen flickers in every 5minutes...

Failing Inverter An inverter, typically found inside a laptop computer, consists of a small board, which has impregnated electronic circuits stamped on it. Inverters look like thin boards about the of two sticks of chewing gum. The inverter and its bulb control the intensity of the liquid crystal display, which lights the screen monitor. The computer can control the output voltage of the inverter and either lighten or darken the screen. A special type of inverter can adjust the brightness of the screen by using an internal sensor to judge the room brightness, and then adjust the screen accordingly. Failing inverters give off some specific warning signs, which can be recognized by observing different screen characteristics.

Short Intermittent Display Upon turning on the laptop, the screen flashes on in the normal mode for a short period and then blinks to black. A very faint image appears in a dark background, which will be very hard to see almost invisible. After shutting off the laptop and restarting, the same mode occurs, where the screen appears normal for a few seconds then fades to black. This condition points to a failed inverter. To confirm this, plug in an operational external monitor; if the external monitor functions, the inverter has failed. b> Total Blackout with Ghost image b> The laptop turns on, as indicated by the power supply button, but the screen comes up black. The screen comes up black after restart. You might be able to detect a very dim or ghost-like image on the monitor. When you plug in a known functioning external monitor, the external monitor operates normally. This mode of display indicates a failed inverter. b> Long Term Periodic Operation b> With this failure mode, the laptop screen illuminates normally upon start-up and remains that way after several minutes, hours or even days, until it goes very dark again. Brightness controls or restoration attempts do not work. Most often, the screen will function normally with a computer restart, but will eventually return to black. Faint ghost images might appear, as seen in the total blackout mode. b> Dark With Color Variation b> Upon computer start-up, the monitor shows black or dark gray, accompanied by very faint images. The screen might have an intermittent color change, or remain on with a non-standard color variation, like pink or red. b> Auto Control Switch b> If the screen appears black, with no faint or ghost images, look for the lid switch near the back hinge. The switch, when depressed with a closed lid, shuts off the computer and monitor functions. Sometimes the switch becomes stuck in the closed position, disallowing the computer and monitor to turn on when opened. Pushing the switch manually several times can often free it up. If the switch tab has broken or jammed inside the case, it needs replacing. b> Loose Connection In this mode, the display looks normal upon start-up, but tapping the side case of the computer turns the screen black. More tapping results in the screen functioning normally then cutting out again. This condition points to a loose wire connection from the inverter to the LCD backlight lamp, or the video cable. The connectors can be accessed by removing the monitor bezel screws and pulling the plastic retainer off. Both connectors can be cleaned and refitted.

According to Lenovo support, error 0211 is a keyboard error - keyboard not working. Ebay sell replacement keyboards for £20 - £30 for your x41 which should hopefully fix this error after fitting.

Before you can use the assigned X41 Wireless ON/OFF key and other hot keys, you need to load the appropriate and specific Hotkey driver for your X41 and Operating system (XP, W2000, VISTA or W7):
If you do not have the drivers media, see this link or other on this Lenovo/IBM site: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-68000.html
ps. You can also locate the Wifi driver starting from the above site.
Hope it helps.

Lenovo ThinkPad X41 Tablet security chip. lost bios boot password

I have had to retrieve the BIOS password from one of these before. It is not an easy thing to get to. You have to first
  • Build a special 9-pin Serial cable using parts you can find at Radio Shack
  • Dismantle the laptop
  • find the correct BIOS chip,
  • Solder a couple wires to the correct pins of the BIOS chip (without getting solder on the other pins, or damaging something)
  • Hook it up to another computer via serial port
  • Do a dump of the information stored on the BIOS chip
  • Use a hex-reader to decipher the information and display the password within.
Here is a link to a site that shows you in detail how to accomplish this. It does work, and I've successfully used the linked method to unlock a X41 of my own.

Laptop Screen Dull

Look a the screen real close, if you see a faint dark version of the image, this could be a backlight issue, otherwise a screen cable or a logic board issue. Backlight repairs are somewhat difficult. As much as I would like to be able to tell you a quickfix that will solve backlight the problem, it's a pretty arduous repair that requires 1-2 hours for a trained person. It's feasible to do it yourself if you're tech savy, but you'll most likely have to google for guides that show you exactly how to replace the backlight step by step. Check on how to take the screen apart and make sure inverter is still connected properly. If so, you have a backlight issue. I work for Computer Repair NYC and i have to fix this problem a lot, it's so easy to break the lightbulb in the process.
