Hp pavilion dv6000

The problem with the HP Pavilion dv2000, Pavilion dv6000, and Pavilion dv9000 series; is inadequate cooling for the graphics chipset.

The metal heatsink area on the Cooling Tube, is too small in surface area.

Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_Circuit

The I.C, or chipset used for graphics is the graphics chipset, or more properly known as the G.P.U.
Graphics Processing Unit,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPU

The GPU is an Nvidia 7400 G0,

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3480

http://www.ebay.com/itm/nVIDIA-Geforce-GF-Go7400-N-A3-G72M-GPU-BGA-IC-Chipset-/360441880624?pt=US_Memory_RAM_&hash=item53ec02a030

The mounting to the motherboard is with a BGA surface mount.
Ball Grid Array.

The bottom of the graphics chipset has Solder Balls.
The mating area on the motherboard has matching Copper Pads, and they are gold plated.

The graphics chipset is set into place with the Solder Balls, lining up on the matching Copper Pads; and heat is applied at a specific temperature, and length of time.

This action melts the Solder Balls, and solders the graphics chipset TO the motherboard.

Due to the constant overheating the solder connections (joints) made, are partially melted.
Then when the laptop is turned off the graphics chipset cools down, and the solder joints re-solidify.

This causes Cold Solder Joints, and a poor contact of graphics chipset to motherboard.

The solution is to add more surface area, to the small metal plate of the Cooling Tube, that sits on the graphics chipset.
Plus reflow the solder joints for the graphics chipset.

BEST, and surety of repair; of reflowing the graphics chipset's solder joints; is to use a BGA Rework Station.

Watch a BGA Rework Station at work, and also view more information about the BGA surface mount,

My hp pavillion dv7 keyboard lock lights keep flashing; at one point the computer didn't want to boot up; I finally got that up today after six months. But the cap lock and the number lock lights still...

those are POST code, error codes, you need to watch time and count them. report them.
leave the battery main out.
does it run ok now? yes/no.? main battery out?.
even new cheap batteries fail easy and hard and short out.
test it with no main battery. it can run on AC power for ever.

are you going to run the COIN cell RTC battery for 10 more years.
it wont make it..
this PC is 10 years old today (can be) so is RTC battery end of life. most fail in 5 to 7 years, says the pink bunny. (and is correct)
the manual shows how to replace it at the real HP Site,
fixya is not hp, not at all.

page 63 shows the way to the RTC

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01918142

if you power on the PC, and hammer the f10 key]
BIOS runs, its menus;
check the time and date here, if wrong the RTC battery is dead.

read page 3 how.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01662442

  • old PC have many points of failure (endless it seems)
  • does the fan run? is it packed in lint, as all are this old.?
  • causing it to overheat?
  • RTC coin cell bad.
  • main battery bad. (just leave it out until the PC runs right again)
  • power pack wires broken, or running real hot.
  • HDD going bad,
  • windows infected?, no OS stated but avoid XP.

HP caps lock POST blink code page is a horror of horrors
no 2008 listing, to name one flaw (2011 and newer sadly)

HP dv7-4165dx keeps shutting down

When does it shut down? Does it boot up and allow you to do anything? If it allows you to do some things then maybe it is running hot and shuts down or a virus is shutting it down. Give us more details on when it shuts down and what was going on when it shut down.

Was gone overnight and when I got home I could hear the fan was still running on my laptop even though it was shut. Was hot to the touch and now it won't turn on I see LEDs lit up but the screen is black

Classic symptom of the nvidia graphics chip failing. Why it failed to shut down I'm not sure of.
What has happened I think, is that the laptop, while running, has built up enough heat to fry the graphics chip ( of caused the solder to loosen). The cpu will withstand the heat, especially as it gets cooling directly.

You can try and strip it to clean out the fan and heatsink of debris and dust, however, in this case I suspect the damage has been done and you will need to get the chip "reballed". Costs about 60.00 on Ebay.

Probably graphics chip error, is your laptop under warranty? if not you may need to seek the services of a technician for a reflow / reball.
