Canon mp160 'venetian blind' printing

Hi there, i recently believed my printer ink to have run out and took them to be refilled. Both black&white and colour are now confirmed to be having ink. I have reinstalled the inks and B and C are flashing on the printer.
Unfortunately i have lost the manual - i have tried everything on the onscreen manual - cleaning nozzle realign etc. Test pages are awful, the blocks that are supposed to appear to be filled in to help align the cartridges arent there - C E F are the only ones that appear at all. Blue ink seems to be not working at all.
Printing in greyscale still gives a pronounced venetian blind effect.
All help appreciated, many thanks.

You mentioned that you used refilled cartridges. Sometimes they don't work too well. Buy a set of genuine Canon replacement cartridges and see if that doesn't solve your problem.

Recently got a cheap compatible replacement ink cartridge for my canon mp160. Did the whole "new ink cartridge" blah blah, even turned the colour level thing off. For some reason now, it's only...

This is called E5 error when you insert refilled cartridge or compatible.....
Printer does not read that particular cartridge.

No solution other than replacing with brand new one.

If you would like to save money, try refill kit by "ROADINK".
Not only they are easy, but also the printing quality is good.
For your better understanding pls check out my youtube video.
And will see how easy ink refill can be done.

How do you print a document using color ink? I am out of black ink.

Ink is a lubricant for the print heads. Some color ink is used even if you only print in black or vice-versa. If you printed with black ink missing, you could destroy that print head from the friction of running without ink to lubricate it. That's why most printers won't allow you to print with black ink missing even if you aren't using it. That's the case with your Canon printer.

If you allow a color to go empty, the residual ink in the head could clog and become permanently blocked. You would never be able to print that color again. So always replace ink cartridges as soon as they are empty.

moust likely you have run out of ink. you can go to a refill store to get it refilled with ink or you can replaced with a new original one.

Color ink cartridge does not print in full colors

Canon printers do not like the refilled ink cartridges. After having ruined a few printers trying to "save" money. I went back to genuine Canon ink and have never had a problem since.

Canon mp160 printer black ink only

When you choose to print, look at the dialog that comes up. You should see something along the lines of color settings. Here, you can select black and white.
