If you are trying to format the DVD-RW Â on the PC Â and not sure if the system drive has the updated driver plz download UNIBLUE DRIVER SCANNER
it will scan and let you know of any outdated driver and will also let you download the latest one also if you are not sure if the burning s/w on your PC is working fine plz download POWERISO this is one of the best s/w for burning also takes less space as compared to nero etc.

I have had htis issue with a Vista system HP where the lightscribe drive did the same thing.
You can try locateinng updated drivers/firmware from the HP website for that model and see if that helps.
Just go to the HP website and enter the model number in the search followed by the word drivers and you should get some results. downlaod and install anything new or just re-install whatvere they have.
I though it may be, i dont htink this is the issue as I had a simialr problem and it turned out the Drive was bad. It owuld read but would error out on burning. i installe on a different computer all together and it still didnt work.
Hp makes alot of systems that are what is called " refurbished"
I have owrked on alot of HP pavilions that met htis category.
ALot of un-suspecting users will by them from Walmart thinkng htey are new computers when they actually have 5 year old parts in them adn the only drivers for it come on the install CD with the O/S when it was purchased.
The pavilions that came with windows ME had this issue and i had alot of customers that wanted to go from ME to XP and it was practically imposible to find any updated drivers because all the parts in this 2000 baught computer, where from 1995.
You burner may have the same issue,it may just be old and ther are no supported drivers for todays current media formats and what not.
Now be sure that in the program that you dont have the DVD type set to like say, a DVD-RWDL or something like that.
Im sure you checked but i have to ask.
At this point in the technology stage, DVD burners are relatively cheap and you cna order one from tiger direct or just go to a local merchant and get one for cheap. consider this against the time, frustration and money you might spend trying to fix it and decide what to do.
If you choose the first option,You will need to use an alterintive burner program.
Option #1
If you dislike the native Windows Vista disk burning utility or if you have a problem with automatic disk format popup when insert a disk in a drive, this is a method to disabile this functionality.
Open Regedit
goto : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Create new DWord with the name : NoCDBurning with value 1.
Restart system.
Explanation and Option #2
When you insert a writable DVD media into Windows Vista, the autoplay dialog should appear and prompt you for the volume label immediately. (this is on a clean install w/o any other writing apps -- nero not required!) You should be able to just drag and drop the files after the initial formatting that this prompt results in. This allows you to write to CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM . You can also choose the "advanced" option during the volume label prompt to choose to use IMAPIv2 in the shell; this results in discs that are more interoperable with consumer electronic devices. Windows Media Player and DVD Maker also use IMAPIv2 to create discs, if you want to make video or audio discs.
To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
The following is Just an extra tool if you need it.(this will show the driver and filter for the cd/dvd device)
For more information about the filter drivers that may be loaded in Windows Vista, run the DevCon program. To do this, follow these steps:
Then, I am using a Panasonic - 3ff7773.jpg that resembles the following appears
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
Dear friend, I don't know exactly what's happen and what's wrong, maybe this error comes from some reasons, I just suggest you test your job by other DVD-RAM, test by other PC, and test by other DVD. by this way you can find the source of problem and you should fix it.
Good luck
In general when an error message refers to the medium, it is referring to the disk. ensure you are using the proper type of DVD (DVD+RW or DVD-RW).

once you are done reboot your system.

to the lense problem in your drive. So u have
to clean the the lense using the lense cleaner
cd.This cd is available outside. If u still come
across this problem go for a change in the drive.
But this cleaning will definitely solve the issue.

thank u..
Mickbuckl, there's lots of good ideas here, but as this is the first I've seen of your quest, the first thing that hit me was your new Lightscribe writer being used with the cameras software. Whereas in most circumstances this could work, Lightscribe drives are a very good universal DVD/CD writer and usually come with their own software. I'd be most surprised if you did not get something like Nero 7 with that drive.
If you have not yet doneso, install the software (like Nero) and try and burn your disk from there.
I would try and use a DVD-R disk as these are more universally recognised. DVD-RW is more for if you want to erase the disk and rewrite it later.
Also, reduce your recording time way way down, to about 2 or 4x, even down to 1x if you are not in a rush - as far as important data goes, such as home movies, this will make the disk more archival and the data last much longer.
To test the drive, whilst doing no other work with the drive, put a disk (to record on) into the drive and (no knowing HP writing software) there should be a "Disk Info" button/menu/section to tell you about the disk you put in. If this info shows no disk or different to the disk you have inserted you would be best to replace the drive (at about $70 comparible now). Also while looking at the disk info, check that the entire media is blank.
Good Luck and please keep us posted on the results.

Mickbuckl, just a quick comment to let you know that last post was a good clue and I will get back to you soon about it.
Looks like a registry setting is needed to be changed - actually, that's exactly what the error message said.
It's most unusual though as all that would have been set with the install of the drive; even by Windows by default. (maybe the question should be why it changed).
I'm considering whether to go through registry changes with you or tackle re-install of all (related) software first - thing is a mistake in the registry can just totally stuff your computer (Windows) requiring a total wipe and reinstall of the lot.
I'll get back to you - Anyone else have an opinion on which way to go here.
Micbuckl, how do you feel about going into the registry to make changes?

* If you use Windows® Vista, you do not need to install UDF Reader.
* If the older version of UDF Reader is installed in your computer, the
message to prompt you to uninstall the older version may appear.
In this case, please uninstall it according to the message.
If you use a laptop computer, please turn off its power saving function.
If a driver for a third-party USB streaming camera is installed, the problem may be resolved by uninstalling the driver.
Please uninstall the packet-writing software(*)installed in your computer.

Although this model is supposed to work with both DVD - R and DVD +R, it usually has problems with DVD -R, that have a less efficient error correction method.
Use DVD+R or DVD+RW, you should not have same problem anymore.
Drivers and software can influence the way the camcorder communicates with computer when you connect it using a data cable.
Surely drivers and software cannot have any influence in using the camcorder to record a disk.
If you get the message : " Unable to record or add data on the currently selected media. Insert formatted or initialised media "
That means that the camcorder is unable to read the DVD inside.
If it is not a problem with the determined DVD brand used, then you need to clean the lens on your camcorder, when a laser device does not recognise a blank disk inside, that is always a lens problem.
Try first using a lens cleaner DVD, if that does not work clean the lens using isopropyl alcohol and cotton tips on lens pickup.
You need to download the latest lightscribe engine from : www.LigthScribe.com.
Also download SureThing CD Labeler 4 SE from same website.
You have not done what I said , hope your problem is fixed.

For the latest driver software, go to Device Manager, then left click the LightScribe DVD. There should be a button to allow you to "update driver".
For the firmware, that's a little more difficult, and I will need more information about the drive, like model number. A search on the HP website will tell if there is a firmware update.
But from what I have found so far, the disks you are using are OK to use, and the writer will write to DVD/RW's.
Driver and firmware issues can exhibit in this way. The device works good for some things, and not for others.
When the manufacturer finds a problem, he updates the drivers, or the firmware, to solve the problems.
OK. That's got the driver taken care of. Now, the firmware deeds to be updates.
When you go to the Panasonic website, find your drive listed. There will be instructions for downloading the firmware update and how to perform installing the update.
Follow the directions step by step. The warnings about not turning the computer off or anything are important to follow. Sometimes the instruction tends to be a little more "chicken little" in my opinion, but their objective is to make sure you don't do somehing tupid that would render the drive useless.
Reply back if you have any questions.

Actually, try using a DVD+R (or -R) disc, not RW
Your dvd righter lense has some problem u have tp repar it or replaced t.
If your are using a DVDRAM be sure that the write protect is out.
There is some problem with the leans of your DVD Drive, first of all try a cleaner disk to clean your disk drive leans.
and let me know for further assistance.
Hi,
it tends your drive is not getting detected .........it is some electronic chip not working to detect the disc.......it is something wrong with control logic.......take to repair shop to service it .......
Have you checked to see if you have the latest firmware and drivers for your CD/DVD burner? Also, have you checked to see if it can actually burn DVD-RWs? Some of them can burn DVD-Rs while not being able to burn DVD-RWs.

How do I check if I have the latest firmware and drivers and how do I check if I can burn DVD-RWs? I'm using an HP Pavilion desktop computer with a LightScribe DVD Supermulti drive/CD-Writer which is only about 1 year old. I have been able to burn other files (word docs etc) to the same DVD-RWs.
Disc drive seems to be working OK. I have no problem loading software (including HD Writer itself) and have also been able to save photos, documents, etc to discs. Using HD Writer is the first time I have experienced any kind of problem with the drive.
I've tried using other disc formats including DVD-R and DVD+R and the same thing happens.
I've checked in Device Manager to ensure thatg I have the latest Driver software and after a check I got the following message;
'The best driver software for your device is already installed'
I'm using Windows Vista Home Basic.
As suggested by dotball I've tried to determine of there is a problem with LightScribe. I found a LightScribe Diagnostic Utility from the LightScribe website. When I run this I get the following;
LightScribe Diagnostic Utility
A system registry setting needs to be corrected for LightScribe to function properly. New value
AllocateCDRoms : 0 (default value)
You will need to restart afterwards
LightScribe Diagnostic Utility
The LightScribe service is not running
This prevents LightScribe from operating
Do you want to attempt to start the service?
[Start Service] [Abort]
When selecting [Start Service]
LSS Version 1.18.1.1
Status AllocateCDRoms setting NOT corrected
LightScribe may not work
The LightScribe service did not start
Drive ATAPI DVD A DHI6A 1l KH15 135 (E:)
No media detected
I'm looking to see if I can find the software (Nero or other) that came with the DVD/CD Writer, but if this is the potentially the cause of my problem how do I correct it? Thanks.
Dotball - I'd prefer not to make any registry changes if they can be avoided, unless it's a very straightforward process. Look forward to your further advice. Thanks.
Junoon007 - I followed the link and loaded the decrypter. When it runs I get the following message :
UDF File System Parsing Failed
Device [0:1:0] ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L KH1A (E:) (ATAPI)
Reason : Function 'UDFFindPartition' returned 0
Appreciate your further advice. Thanks.
praky16 - thanks - I've already tried downloading the HD Writer software from the Panasonic site. I reloaded it even though it looks like I was already running this version of HD Writer. Anyway, unfortunately the problem still exists......
Thanks BuschChris1 - suspecting it might be a problem with my internal DVD burner I bought a new Freecom external DVD burner last weekend and I am now experiencing exactly the same problem when I try to save using the new DVD burner (disc ejects automatically when I start the burn).
So I believe there can only be two remaining causes (a) the HD Writer software that I'm using or (b) something to do with the DVD discs
Incidentally when I click to initialise the DVD-RW disc in HD Writer it does identify the disc as follows;
Media Information
DVD-RW(Unformatted) - Protect OFF
When I start the initialisation process I get the following message
Disc format failed
Error [0x9703005A]
Appreciate any further advice. Thanks.
Thanks for everyone's advice but unfortunately none of it was correct. It turms out that there was a conflict between HD Writer and other DVD burning software that was installed on my computer - once I removed the other software I was able to save the DVDs using HDWriter.
