It sounds like a hardware fault on the drive itself. The laser and focussing mechanisms are different for CDs and DVDs. The fact that the drive can read DVDs fine suggests that the laser and lenses can no longer focus correctly to deal with CDs.
Replacement of the drive would be the only fix, although you might find it a lot easier to buy an external USB DVD drive.
You can only change the region code 4 times then it locks on the last change.
There are some firmware upgrades that can change the drive to region free, if you can screw it up or put in the wrong frmware upgrade then the DVD drive will be a piece on junk.
I suggest you install a region free software that will allow you to play and region DVDs.
Go to www.dvdidle.com to get their Region-Free software, it is not very expensive.
perhaps the DVDs are region coded and may not play on the computer..please check if they are of different regions(can be found of the back cover of the dvd box usually)
Region Code is concidered when you play any DVD movie directly from the Drive.
Like you insert any Video DVD in the Drive and right click on it and play directly where the Region Code comes into Picture.
You will be able to change the video code 4 times to use Video DVDs of different regions. However, the fifth time, what ever the DVD you use, the Drive will be locked to that region.
We need to check whether your Notebook is able to detected the DVD Drive or not.
Follow the steps listed below to check it :
Insert any DVD which you used earlier like a Data Disk or Video Disk in the DVD Drive of the Notebook and close the tray.
Now, go to My Computer and right click on the DVD Drive of the Notebook and select Open or Explore.
If you are able to see the content of the DVD / CD, the Notebook is able to detect DVDs.
I recommend you to copy the video files in the DVD into the Hard Drive and play them since this will reduce the noise generated by the DVD Drive while playing video from DVD and also its life time will be increased.
You need to copy the Video_ts folder which contains the video files in Video DVDs.
thanx dear, but my notebook pc is not registered there...sad.
