I have a walk in freezer heatcraft evap that was working fine til the defrost timer went bad. changed timer 8045-20 paragon with identical timer. now it goes into defrost but heating elements won'

Terminal N is 2nd wire needed to complete circuit.
In 240V 8145-20, there are two hot wires.
One Hot connects to terminal 1, with jumper to terminal 2.
Second Hot connects to terminal N, and this will power the clock motor and timer.
Terminal X is for temperature or pressure termination switch.

Defrost cycle works like this:
Timer is running but switched OFF.
Refrigeration fan is ON.
Timer switches ON, defrost cycle begins.
Refrigeration fan turns OFF.
Hot gas defrost turns ON.
When temperature-or-pressure limit switch reaches trip point, it switches timer OFF.
Refrigeration fan turns ON again.
Hot gas defrost turns OFF.

I have a Paragon 8145-20 D-Frost-O Matic installed in on my walk-in freezer. The ice is accumulated on the fins of the freezer. Now it run for 11 minutes then stop for 3.5 minutes. I think the stop time...

2) Typically the 8145-20 defrost cycle is time-initiated and starts when tripper pin located on outer part of dial passes the time-of-day point.
Defrost cycle terminates or ends when pressure or temperature switch activates. This is also called the cycle limit switch.

3) So your situation sounds like the pressure or temperature switch is not working correctly.

4) The 8145 timer also has 'time termination' setting. This red tripper is located on inner part of dial.
Usually the 'time termination' is used as back-up system if the pressure or temperature switch fails so that defrost cycle will not continue melting everything in freezer.

5) To solve problem until pressure-temperature switch is replaced, you can disconnect wire on terminal X, and then set 'time termination' for correct length of time by experimenting.

MY 8145-20 DEFROST TIMER WILL NOT ADVANCE,
I am not sure of your wiring but see no reason that you could not run straight from the breaker to the timer and the timer to the freezer. Determine how long you want the defrost time to be on each hour and set the pegs accordingly. This is if I understand or picture your timer correctly. You have a walk in Freezer, and a rather large box 110 volt timer,correct? The pins on the 24 hour timer wheel can be taken off or moved? If I am wrong, I am sorry. I have the wrong picture in mind.

Set defrost timer on Paragon Electric Defrost-O-Matic
If the air flow and temperature are not being compromised leave it alone. If there is a gradual build up of ice on the evaporator you may have a defrost element or defrost limit switch problem. Set the defrost duration duration to 45 minutes and see if that solves the icing problem. 4 defrost cycles a day should be enough to keep the icing problem at bay. 3 defrost cycles at night about 1 hour apart may also remedy the problem. Experiment until you find the right combination of defrost cycles for your freezer. Watch for any thawing of the product in the freezer and adjust accordingly.

does the defrost timer has to do anything with the evaporator fans coming on and off, in a walk in freezer unit? because in my unit the fan turns off for a long period of time. A walking freezer unit's temperature is 20f. plus. the evaporator fans are off for a very long period of time, how do I shorten the time or adjust the fan's, on and off cycling?
