We removed the shift lever to clean under the flange... didn't turn or move anything, but after installation 1st and 2nd positions both run in 2nd speed. 3rd works fine.
I took my apart and found out that the fork had a crack at the end of it causing the gear not fully engage.
I replaced the fork and now I have my first gear back.
I took mine apart completely and reassembled everything and greased everything and mine is doing the same thing. I'm thinking, also, that it is the tightening of the top lock nut.
SOURCE: problem with the 3rd gear on Hobart D300
Hobart won't give up service manuals The slide for your shift fork may be froze or corroded at top. The gear setups are fairly simple. The mainshaft nut comes off counterclockwise. The top gear has one way rollers with shims under the large washer. This gear assy must go back in the right way or you will break gears as soon as you start it.These mixers corode a lot at the top gearbox when they sit idle from moisture. Also check for broken gear teeth that may be jaming up he works. If you want to sell it let us know.

CE is the marking that shows its european conformant. I think the difference is mostly in terms of the no volt interlock switch. This means the KA style N50 bowl won't work with the CE models - too low.
SOURCE: I have a Hobart A-200 that shifts gears by itself,
first tighten the top main shaft nut all the way, then back off 1/4 turn ,then go to the planetary nut remove acorn nut, the 1/8 wide nut tighten all the way then back off 1/4 turn reassemble mixer try oper. of speeds. let me know how you make out please

Could be that a gear is missing (broken) on the shaft that works the 1st gear. Check out the schematic at
http://www.food-equipment.com/parts_Hobart_mixers.htm
It could be the gear HM2-748

We also had the planetary/attachment hub off to regrease.
We have parts diagrams, but it doesn't detail functionality of the parts.
