I switched the dishwasher off at the mains and then back on again. At this point the plastic arm started making a noise like it was trying to retract so I pulled the door to help it along. The door opened and the arm fully retracted - much to my relief.

hi,

what you need to do is slack off the spring tension on the door hinges. each side of the unit at the base on the plinth there is a screw with a spring symbol next to it. turn this anti clockwise to reduce the spring tension.

you need to adjust the door tension springs which is by a screw each side of the hinges on the plinth of the unit at the front. There is a symbol of a spring to show you which screws to release. do them evenly and the door will not spring up,

I've just installed a Miele 5500SCU Dishwasher and the springs that support the door cant be adjusted far enough to take the weight of the door, does anyone have any suggestions?
If the dishwasher is brand new, then there is an issue with the configuration of the springs, i.e not mounted correctly. A factory dishwasher door should not need to be adjusted. However if it is older, it is possible that the springs came off, in which case they can be seen from the underside of the dishwasher and by a panel that unscrews on the bottom of the door. Make sure the springs are there.

My KitchenAid Dishwasher door won't stay closed. It keeps popping open after a few seconds.
I experienced the same problem after my tension cables broke. The door fell open with such force that it bent the hinges a little. If you've replaced the tension strings (which you should do every 5-8 years) then you don't have to replace the latch. I did and it didn't solve the problem.
Here's the solution:
Put a towel at the bottom of each side of the door by the hinge.
Push the door closed a couple of times to bend back the hinges.
Remove the towels and you're back in action.

you can tension the door springs or release tension by a screw at the top ....you will have to look for it check the book for directions....you probably have a model made for a door panel to be fitted and dont have the panel fitted yet...

The door just flys open and slams down with no support. Won't stay closed unless pushed in all the way.
I'm no sure why the door is flying open but it the door is falling without any tension, it sounds like 1 or both of the cheezy nylon lines that hold the door springs or their plastic accessories have bit the dust. Look at page 24 of your installation instructions if you have them. Shows what they look like. If you pull the dishwasher out, you will see them in the front on the lower left and right. Our dishwasher is 7 years old and they have broken twice now.

Door does not stay horizontal when opened. How do I adjust the door springs?
Hello Slosh,
The are four torx screws (Two on each side) of the door panel near the bottom. The top screw controls tension and the bottom allows you to position the door. Be careful when loosening the panel as the screws will come out completely and then you will need to remove the outer door panel and reattach the door springs
