I have a cobra 29LTD. It is hooked up to the lighter adapter. The power comes on people can hear me fine but I can't hear any incoming talk. I had a external speaker hooked up and unplugged it and still nothing. I use it 5-10 times a year for coyote hunting and it worked perfect, not this time. Anyhelp is appreciated, or do I just need to take it to someone who knows what there are doing.
Yes set up correctly, all you do is plug it into a lighter. Volume up squelch down. I wil open up and check speaker connections.Yes set up correctly, all you do is plug it into a lighter. Volume up squelch down. I wil open up and check speaker connections.

I'd buy another radio.Lot easier than fixing the audio section..Ic chips with 16 to 30 pins(agh) and it costs $50 for each part or repair and it may not solve it. A good Uniden or Cobra is only $75 at www.copperelectronics.com or at a flea market people sell old radios for $25
First make sure the mic is in all the way. You may even need to change mic's. there may be a broken lead in the plug. It happened to a buddy of mine. If the mic is removed the audio will drop.
Other things that can cause this. RF gain is down. you need to turn this all the way up. there is no need to ever turn it down unless you are on a fox hunt or there is a lot of DX noise and you are talking to some one fairly close to you.
there could be something wrong with the external speaker jack. have you lugged any thing in to it? it may be stuck.
and of course the speaker. Plug in an external speaker, if you have audio then its the speaker.
If you have sound on the radio coming through the speaker, most likely its the RF GAIN, if its none of those the receive may have blown in the radio. take it to a tech.

I see two possible problems. First, with a magnetic antenna it is difficult to get the proper ground for the antenna. Make sure the magnetic base is clean as well as where you place it. Second, try running your power lead DIRECTLY to the battery and not using the cigarette lighter. Hope it helps.

HELLO STAN FIRST HAS THE RADIO BEEN PEAKED AND TUNED? SECOND IS THE INTERIOR LIGHT IN YOUR PICK UP RIGHT BELOW YOUR ANTENNA,IF SO YOU HAVE A PROBLEM BUT EASY FIX THE WIRING GOING TO THE LIGHT ACTS LIKE AN EXTRA ANTENNA CAUSING YOUR ANTENNA TO RESONATE TO YOUR RADIO CAUSING THE A W I LIGHT TO COME ON MOVE YOU ANTENNA BACK A LITTLE FUTHER AND SHOULD BE GOODif you want to get a bettter antenna get a willson 500 mag mount far better
The protection diode (a black, tub looking devise) hooked to the positive power wire near the back of the radio, is most likely your problem. Check to see if any doides are shorted by using a Volt/Ohm Meter by checking for a short. For more imformation or help, email me at [email protected]. "Original Radio Man" Ed
You blew a diode near back of radio.(1) Take back cover off.spkr side) (2), see if you spot a black diode with a white stripe in right hand side between audio transformer and chassis near power wires coming in. (3)replace that diode; solder it..it may work again.
there may be a very low noise level. If the noise level is low you will hear almost nothing. You need to go on ch 19 and drive near a major interstate.
Key up and say, "Break one nine for a radio check" and a trucker will come back and tell you its working. If you hear him okay, then your radio is working fine.
Some days, background noise is heavier and lighter then others.
This is an easy fix if you are comfortable soldering.
You must have hooked it up backwards. Big problem when using a cigarette lighter adapter. You have to be careful, if you hook a radio up backwards you blow the polarity protection diode.
Go to radio shack and buy an N1004 diode.
Open the radio
Look towards the back right of the radio for a black diode D23. it will probably look burnt, but not always.
Use a soldering wick to remove the solder holding the diode in.
Remove it, and replace the diode making sure its going in the same direction as the old on. Strip on the side the triangle is pointing.
Solder it in.
Test the radio
That should do it.
Make sure you are careful to hook the radio up to power corrctly.
Often an error code "Y" would indicate test/diagnostic result of the antenna. A communication equipment thus equipped would test the SWR and display this error code if:
no antenna detected; or
SWR of antenna is way too high.
Although am not familiar with the version of a Cobra 29LTD with this type of display. Could you pls post back the exact model of the radio, normally there would be two (2) more letters after the LTD something like Cobra 29LTD BT.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.
Had fixed the same problem yesterday. My cobra worked when it wanted to, when it didn't it looked like you explained. I found out that on my cobra the blue wire on the mike connector was broken. When it disconnects, no sound. after soldering, everything works fine.
