I am seeing a halo type effect around my main subject of the picture. It appears on the screen and once the pictures are printed making them seem almost out of focus.

I have the very same happening to my 400D, I took it back to the shop that I bought it in and they said it was no problem and like you it doesn't do anything to my photos, Willie.

Your ccd appears to be bad. Canon USA will repair this for free. Go here for details. They will send you 2 emails. One with the UPS label and another with info sheets to be sent with the defective camera

its actually probably the display. there is 3 different displays. 1. shows picture with icons 2. shows just the picture and 3. is a solid black screen. just hit the display button to cycle through until your desired display is present

This is known problem of ccd imager failure in Canon A85 camera and ccd imager will be replaced to get correct live view to take pictures.
