Tannins are the name given to a substance made from the seeds, stems and skins of grapes. They affect the color, aging ability and texture of the wine. They cannot be tasted directly; however they can be apparent when tasting wines. They are perceived through a tactile sensation.

My Krups model 198 is about 10 years old and still works fine except the coffee isn't as flavorful and I noticed that the grounds have a hole down the center like they aren't getting f

Sounds like the water which should be sprayed over the grounds is dribbling out is a stream instead of a spray. Clean out the machine with an approved de tannin powder/solution and clean the spray head with something like a toothbrush. This should open up the screen holes and produce a shower effect again.

How can I remove tannins from water

Tannins which is water that has organic material from decaying foliage can be a bit of an issue with your equipment especially the filters but for the most part is an aesthetic issue. The only way to remove the tannins is pre-filtering before you put the water in the hot tub. You can purchase a purestart pre-filter you attach to your hose when filling your hot tub. If that does not do the job there are some applications from MetalTrap that may aid you as well. If all else fails you may have to look into something more industrial like Tannin Filters Tannin Filter Systems Remove tannic acid color from well...

What is chemical composition of tannins

Tannins are a series of hydroxyl groups connected together (that is long chains of H Hydrogen & O Oxygen bonds). Tannic acid is a series of dozens of these hydroxyl's, but there are many other naturally occurring and synthetic Tannins. Tannins love to react (join up with) with other complex molecules like proteins, to form strong polymers. They have been used in tanning hides into leather for centuries.
In the case of the carpet cleaner, I suspect that they bind to whatever brown stain gunk you had in your carpet then form a new compound that can be rinsed away :) How did it work ?

What are the most common qualities of a Pinot Noir?

Pinot Noirs may be one of the hardest grape varieties to manufacture, but if done right, are one of the tastiest. They are typically lighter in color, in comparison to Cabernets and Merlots, have relatively high alcohol content and are comparatively low in tannins. Its flavors/aromas are generally quite fruity and earthy.

What are the classical characteristics of a Merlot grape variety?

Merlots are generally deep in color, full bodied, low tannin red wines. The aromas can sometimes be that of plums or even chocolate. Many people consider Merlot to be an easier drinking wine to Cabernet's due to their lower tannin content.

What are the classical qualities of a Cabernet Sauvignon?

Cabernet Sauvignon grapes produce red wines that are characteristically high in tannins, medium to full-bodied, with aromas of blackcurrants. Since this grape variety is quite tannic, manufacturers will often blend it with other grape varieties, most often Merlots.

Why is my tea cloudy?

The scientific reason for the cloudiness of tea is the precipitation of the tannins in the tea that occurs when the tea is cooled. Cloudiness does not affect the flavor of the tea.
  1. Stronger brews tend to cloud more readily than weaker ones.
  2. High quality teas cloud faster than others.
  3. Hard water also has a clouding affect on tea

Add a small amount (1/4 cup) of boiling water into the brewed tea to help reduce the amount of cloudiness.

Foul Odor

Odor from the water softening system can be attributed to several causes.
The best way to see if it is coming from the softener is to by-pass the softener and run the COLD water only for several minutes and see if the smell continues. Now run the HOT water and see if smell is coming from the water heater.
Some causes may be:
1. Hydrogen sulfide in the water supply (the water chemistry can change)
2. Sulfate reducing bacteria. Almost all water supplies have sulfates and if bacteria gets introduced into the plumbing system it acts with the sulfates to create sulfate reducing bacteria. Which creates a rotten egg smell in the water.
3. Salt additives can have many different affects on water chemistry and organics in the water causing musty, fishy, swampy type smells.
4. If you have a system for Tannins using salts with additives will always cause foul smells as it harms the Tannin media.
5. The ANODE rod in the water heater degrades and gives off a sulfur type, rotten egg smell.
