If you want the solution to your problem, I need the info off of the bottom of the laptop.

Using Lenovo ThinkPad T61 6458-GW4 as an example;

Lenovo = Manufacturer (IBM)
ThinkPad = Series
T61 = Subseries
6458 = Machine Type
GW4 = Model

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/default.page?

I will then find the Drivers download page for YOUR Lenovo, and the Audio driver.

Don't care what Device Manager states. Need to reinstall the Audio driver.

Post back in a Comment.

There is a green vertical line on my display when i opened it today

Hi,
Welcome to Fixya Support
I am Michelle, and i will be assisting you regarding the issue
Please turn off the laptop...take the battery out as well as unplug the adapter cord.
once done, keep the power button of the laptop pressed for around 10 seconds.
insert the battery back in and plug the adapter cord.
turn on the notebook and check.

in case issue persists, please restart the computer..tap the f2 key on the lenovo logo. please check if the vertical line is visible in the system setup bios screen as well. If yes, then the LCD requires a replacement

If not then please reinstall the video drivers.

Similar problem here...Lenovo T61p won't power up.

Sounds like it needs the magic reset procedure. Press the power button 11 times and on the 11th time hold it for 30 seconds. Put the battery and power adapter in and retry it.

Ibm t61 turns on but all I get is a blank black screen.

Hi,
This sounds rather bad. You're not even getting a "thinkpad" screen?
Try unplugging the power and removing the battery for a minute and attempt to power up again.
If it's still not starting, try removing the memory modules (if there are two, remove one and try powering up, then try to remove the other one). Although I seem to remember that newer thinkpads will still show thinkpad logo and attempt to POST even with bad memory (then throw an error), it's always worth a try.
If the above don't make any difference then I'm afraid most probably your motherboard has failed. In theory you could also try swapping the cpu-I've seen a cpu go bad ONCE in my several years of tinkering with laptops.
T61 is a current model-wouldn't it still be under warranty from lenovo? Might be worth checking the serial on their website. Otherwise it's time to search for T61 donor laptops on ebay - ordering a new motherboard from lenovo parts suppliers will most probably be far too expensive.
Good luck, hope you get it working again!

Reset factory password on t61 lenovo

password for what? bios or windows?
if it's the windows password, press the f8 key before windows starts and choose safe mode, choose administrator for the username and then go to user accounts and remove the password for your account.
if it's the bios password, you have to strip the laptop and pull the bios battery on the system...it looks like a large watch battery but becarefull not to break anything.

i think its a BIOS locked. You need to take out the battery of the motherboard for few seconds and put it back.If you can't locate the battery then go to the computer store or the place where you bought your laptop.
