My DVD/CD-RW drive isn't recognized/ doesn't play disks.

When in insert a disk, it spins. But within a few seconds it starts making a repetitive mechanical error sound. It hasn't been working for about 6-9 months.

It may be bad. Has the laptop been damaged? Dropped? Open Device Manager, DVD/CD Rom drives, is it listed? In Start Menu, Computer, Is it listed? Try re installing the DVD rom driver, the MS Vista 32bit drivers can be found here: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/vostro-a860

SOURCE: DVD drive cannot recognize DVD disk, but can read other CDs

I'm assuming you have tried a different dvd also and no joy, but it may need a lens clean or it is unable to read dvd anymore as the tracks are closer together than a cd and the alignment of the laser is faulty. Notebook roms are replaceable but only mainly from your notebook manufacturer. You could also use an external dvd writer via usb, although this then doesn't make your notebook as portable, if you need to read a dvd disc.

SOURCE: CD/DVD drive stopped working gradually

  1. Ensure the Drive is seen in MY Computer
  2. Try removing the upper and lower filters per this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
If the drive is seen in BIOS and in MY COMPUTER, but will not read any media after running the microsoft fix and rebooting, then replace the drive.

SOURCE: DVDs/CDs no longer play on my laptop

You can try cleaning the pickup lens with a cotton swab or cloth. Be careful not to damage anything. Also try a different DVD to verify the disks integrity.
Good luck.

Dvd+rw nd-2100ad no disk in drive error

Can you see DVD-RW drives indicator busy when you insert that disk for a long time? if so, your drive may not going to read that disk. If it is in case of CD disk, sometimes DVD-RW just can't read it while very old CD-ROM can read! If this happens in case of other CD/DVD witch is readable by other DVD-RW, You may just try to clean the lens of your drive.

I recently bought Sims 3 for PC. So, when I open my IBM disk tray and put the disk in, the computer doesn't recognize it and I cannot install the game. This game was a little expenisve, so I would

Hi Elizabeth,

Depending on the model of your IBM PC, it could be that it has a CD drive and not a DVD drive. The Sims 3 game is on a DVD. If this is the case you will have to upgrade your CD player to a DVD player.

To test if your drive is working insert an original music CD into the drive and see if it plays. If it does play you most likely have a CD player and not a DVD player, which means you will have to upgrade to a DVD player/writer drive anyway.
These are relatively inexpensive and retail for approximately $20 to $50.

Feel free to reply should you need any further assistance.
Best wishes,

Cant play movies from my toshibia laptop

Hi:
There are several reasons why a movie won't play, so I will run a few suggestions by you:

Hopefully ;you have a DVD drive or a DVD RW drive ?

If you insert a DVD or CD into the drive, your computer should recognize that a disk is inserted. If not the drive might be bad

You must have some sort of Software installed to make movies play, such as WinDVD, or PowerDVD

the DVD-RW is faulty, take it in and get another one to replace it. the clicking noise may be coming from the rack gear inside the device and causing a malfunction.

DVD/RW Recognition Issue

+/- media matters =)

make sure you're using compatible media... some cd/dvd drive will do this spinning and spit out the media they don't recognize. if you're inserting blank cd/dvd, check the lable on the disk if you're using the plus "+" then replace it with a minus "-" then vise versa...

Reads all but DVD-Help PLEASE

When you say it won?t read are you trying to play commercial DVD movies or read DVD data disks? If you're trying to play movies then you need a couple of things the first being some type of player program. Real player works as does Windows media player but usually DVD drives come with a striped down version of PowerDVD or WinDVD. If you in fact have a player installed and when a DVD is inserted in your drive it doesn't play it may not be configured to automatically play DVDs. Try opening your player program and trying to manually play your DVD. Let us know if you have any success or if you need more assisted. If you do let us know what player program and operating system you have and any error messages that may appear.
