I have an Ariston Margherita AL128 and the same problem happened. The dial keeps on turning and the operation does not finish at all. After skimming through the manual, it occurred to me that it could be the pump that's causing not to drain or spin anymore. Dislodge the white covering infront (just located at the bottom). Once opened, unscrew the black button at the right hand side. Once open, check for blockages like coins, loose items, even lint. This worked for me and saved me $$$!!!! Now my Ariston is back to its superb performance. Do read the manual once in a while, it does help! I lost mine but was able to download a copy from the net.

No idea why but it happens to us to. You need to cancel the wash, switch off and leave a few mins then retry, not that it may work.
Now the spin cycle has stopped on ours too plus the spin is not actually working, drum is just going round and round slowly! We've had it just over a year so the guarantee has finished too :-(
Try the drive belt from motor to the drum it could have stretched a little? The noise you can hear could be the heating element catching the inner drum or something like a wire from a bra came loose in a wash and is trapped between the drums ?
No reset. Carbon brushes are worrn out. Consider changing the bearings while you have the motor apart. Se http://www.nettoparts.co.uk/shop/frontpage.html for spares.
