To setup the Bose 901's so that all of your connected equipment's sound (cable/dvd/games/stereo/etc) comes out of the 901's.
If you already have a receiver with front left and right pre-outs, I would add an amplifier. (other option is a pre-amp) Use the amplifier to create the loop the 901's need w/ their EQ and it will also add a cleaner sound and added power. That's how you can really make the Bose 901's sound amazing.

Similar problem...I came up with a solution with
help from Onyko. For my receiver, at least, the bottom line was that
the output from the equalizer MUST go to 'Receiver, Tape In'! Since
that is the ONLY input source from the equalizer, you must combine
elsewhere. Part of my setup included the Radio Shack Audio/Video
Selector box which costs $21.99...you might not need it, but in my
case, I couldn't plug all components into the back of the receiver and
have them go through the equalizer.
Since I have a satellite
receiver, DVD player and TV, that I want to route through the
equalizer, here is the way mine is set up and working:
Satellite receiver and DVD player out to Radio Shack audio/video selector
Audio/video selector out to VCR in.
VCR video directly to TV
VCR audio red/white (audio) out to equalizer
Equalizer out to Receiver Tape IN (Receiver Out not used)
Hope this (or a variation of it) helps.

I had the same problem- I have a Pioneer VSX-518 and Bose 901 series IV. My receiver has no "Tape Monitor", so after trying different hook ups, I went and bought a "3 input video switcher" (about $10.00) I run my STB (cable box), my PS3 and my computer through the inputs of the switcher (just the audio L/R) then the output to the Bose EQ input, then from the Bose EQ output to my receiver input (I chose to use the TV/DVR input). Now I just have to select which source I want to listen to from the switch, make sure the receiver is set to TV/DVR and I have fantastic sound via my Bose 901s. With this hookup, I have my 3 componets video connected to my HDTV via HDMI cable. It works for me. Hope this helps.

Hi.
Running thru tape deck before equalizer will not do any good. The manual simply states that if the receiver has a tape monitor connection, then you can connect the 901 equalizer through this connection (basically an aux preamped output), the R-406 does not call the output tape monitor. It is the plug called Remote Control Output -Tape - tape1 cassette deck. Since the connector present in amp tape monitor does not use twin audio cables, you will need an adapter.
Connect a preamped (not final) Output from amp to 901 equalizer, and then connect output from equalizer to input on amp. In input the amp has twin cables, then you can use tape 1 or tape 2 input connecting the other end of twin cables to output on back of equalizer.
The R405 out can be connected directly to the back of r406 using tape2 input (twin cables).
Regards.

I was finally able to connect my Carver w/pre in and outs to my 901's eq. I had to switch the in to the out, weird, but it works and sounds awesome! I have an old VCR (yes still have VHS Tapes) and a DVD player going through an older projection TV with Analog RCA connections then going into the Receiver Video input, had to adjust the TV's output in the menu to make it sound much better. I also have a connection from for my MP3 or Phone and hooked up to the CD in for playing my MP3 music. HA Ha and they said it couldn't be done!!!!!!
