I am looking at trying to fix a slim PS2 for a friend. They told me they tried an original Fifa0x game in it and it has never worked since. I have just tried it and I get no screen on the tv (just a blue screen) and no sound. The disc seems to be loading fine and the laser sounds like it's reading ok. I have changed the lead from the PS2 to the TV with one of mine that I know works so it's not that. i intend to take it apart and have a look, but any info first would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, are you using the original PS2? If you are then it more then likely is the age of the console. The original PS2 console actually can't play some of the games that were made after the PS2 slim was released. If your using the slim than the only thing i can advise is to try using a laser lens cleaner disc and see if that helps :)
Okay, If your using the original PS2 console, then your problem is the age of the console. It actually can't play some of the games that were released after the PS2 slim was released. If this is the case, there's not much you can do but try to find a PS2 slim or get a PS3 with the ability to play PS2 games :(
Fat and Slim PS2's generally have different playability with disks. a slim, for example, does not want to play old blue-backed disks, though it will easily read PSX black backs.
I'll need more information on the disk and the PS2 to give a complete answer.
Your ps2 needs to be fixed, gow 1 and 2 are dual layered discs and alot of ps2 originals and slims have trouble playing it, trying calling sony and they can usually fix it for about $45, the laser in your ps2 is worn.
Hope this helps :)
I don't want to put you down or nothing but, buying the slim ps2 wasn't a great idea. If you bought the original ps2 it would've been better. The thing about the thin ps2 is the hd is small, the laser tends to become weaker faster. Go get the ps2 checked out someplace.
Its sounds like you have a PS2 Slim with a melted Laser. What you will find is that the Slim will only read CD's, CDR's, PS1 Games, Blue back PS2 games and DVD's. I can repair this for $35 plus shipping to and from The Playstation Clinic in Fountain Inn, SC. The webpage is www.playstationclinic.com If you do not have a Slim, you either have dirty disc, or Lens. You may have left some fibers from the Q-tip across or around the lens.
