CD/DVD drive and external harddrives via USB not acessable

I have an Acer Aspire 5100 running Vista. Just recently the DVD and two external harddrives (Trekstor) are no longer acessable. In windows explorer I can see the drives, but they have a red circle around them and when I try to double click on them I get a message saying that I have no access to the drives. Placing any DVD in the drive and then trying to play it from Media Centre results in a message saying no DVD is recognized in the drive, although I know the DVDs are ok.
I would appreciate any help. Thanks

I once had a problem like this. It turn out that i just forgot to plug of my external drive. because of the lack of power of the device, it wasnt functioning properly. Try to see if you have two USB plugs, or one Usb plugs with a power cable.  Re check if both of the plugs are indeed connected properly.

I have an Acer 5100 laptop approx. 8 years old that has a CD/DVD drive that DOES NOT work.

Not enough info to really answer this question. It could be a software problem. Here is a common issue, the article refers to Vista but it applies to XP as well. Note, this is dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/929461/the-cd-drive-or-the-dvd-drive-does-not-work-as-expected-on-a-computer-that-is-running-windows-vista
If it does turn out to be a hardware issue, it would probably be easier and cheaper just to buy an external USB CD/DVD drive.

Can I purchase an attachment cd player to my acer aspire one?

Netbooks are done without space for DVD drive, so you must purchase external DVD drive.
This should work for you: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135216&cm_re=external_dvd_drive_usb-_-27-135-216-_-Product

It is connected via USB, and I think doesn't need any other source of power.
It's really great solution for people without dvd drives.

I want to replace the dvd drive for acer aspire 5100-3357 with another internal dvd drive but I do't know the type or the model #, all I know is that is a super multi double layer and supports DVD +-...

A better not complicated solution is an external drive.
Like the:
LG GP08LU10 Optical MediaSlim External Super-Multi DVD Drive You might not know it from looking at this DVD drive's sleek, slim exterior, but it's loaded with capabilities. LG's external CD- and DVD-burner looks great, and works in four unique formats. Super-multi read-and-write lets you select your style for maximum performance, while the USB connection means there's no need for an AC adapter.

Installing cd/dvd games on acer aspire one a110

Get an external CD/DVD drive (USB) and run the game from that. (It's probable that you are hitting a copyright lock that needs the original disc.)

Acer 5100 lost dvd/cd drive

Is the DVD drive listed in device manager under CD/DVD drives at all? If so, remove it and reboot. Windows might be able to re-detect and reinstall the drivers for it, but odds are the drive is bad. You can try removing the drive from the computer, and use compressed air to blow out the area where it connects to the laptop. Also check the connection on the DVD drive to make sure there isn't any physical damage, bent pins, etc.

Hope this helps - remember to rate!
