SOURCE: Error 344- Fax Function

Comm Error 344 is: (Note that this is on the receivers end)

The remote machine has failed to respond to a fax command from the product because the connection is interrupted.

The remote user has pressed the Stop button while the remote machine was receiving.

Under rare conditions, incompatibility between the two machines can cause the remote machine to simply abandon the call.

SOURCE: When I fax I get an error message 344* What does

  • The remote machine failed to respond to a fax command from the local machine because the connection was interrupted. These errors can occur if the phone lines in the area to be faxed are old or there is noise (static on the phone line). Other reasons can include power outages and other power-related problems.
  • The call-waiting service can cause this error. The click, heard for an incoming call, is actually a momentary disconnect of the line.
  • The remote user pressed the Stop key while the reception was in progress.
  • Under rare conditions, incompatibility between the two machines might cause the remote machine to abandon the call.

Solutions
  • Retryt the fax reception at a different time when telephone line conditions have improved. Call the telephone provider if line conditions fail to improve.
  • Disable ECM. Errors might still occur, and might result in a degraded image quality on the received page. However, the ability to send the entire document will be improved. Click here for instructions on enabling and disabling ECM (c00060802) (in English).
  • Try sending at a lower transmission speed.

My HP 8600 Premium no longer sends or accepts FAXes. It says it's connecting, but never does. And returns error 344. I know the other fax machines are working fine. Please advise.

Here's a document that explains some on the fax error codes: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=buu02549
The code 344 indicates noise or static on the line and usually the best way to get around that is to disable Error Correction Mode and/or lower the fax speed.
To disable the Error Correction Mode (ECM) touch the right arrow, then Setup, then Advanced Fax Setup, then down arrow and then Error Correction Mode and set it to Off.
To lower the fax speed, also go to Advanced Fax Setup and set it to Slow.

Fax

344 Error can be caused by a few things. One of the following is occurring:
The sending fax has failed to respond to a fax command from the receiving fax due to poor line quality or fax interruption.

The sender has pressed cancel button while the reception was in progess.

In rare conditions, incompatibility has been encountered by two faxes and causes the sending fax to abandon the fax call.

Solutions:
Fax session was using ECM. Check your fax settings under the fax set-up menu on the printer. Disable the ECM (Error Correction Mode).

Fax at a different time to see if line quality improves.

Try relocating the fax to a differnt phone plug.

Replace the phone cord attached to the fax/printer.
