I just purchased an acer aspire mini laptop. I thought it had a place to hook up a phone line for dial up internet service. Is there a way you can get dial up on these mini's or is it wireless only?

Your dial-up relies on the internal modem to be working properly.
Check for your modem status using Device Manager.
If the listing for the modem has any yellow or red highlighting, then the modem software or hardware needs to be changed. If you leave your PC plugged into a phone line, internal modems are easily destroyed by lightning storms or surges in the phone line. If the Device Manager looks okay, then call your Internet Service Help Desk.
Welcome to Fixya. If you want to connect the notebook to the internet you need to have a service form at&t either Uverse or DSL becuase you need to have a modem or a router to convert the phone signal to data signal to have an internet connection.
Modern laptops are doing away with phone modems. If you need to use a dial-up and this computer has no built-in modem, you will have to purchase a PCMCIA card to put in the side--one that is a modem.
You have two different devices here. A modem and a wireless network adapter. Two totally different devices. It sounds like the modem quit working but the wireless network adapter still functions. I'm assuming that the modem is built it. If you absolutely have to have it you could buy a PCMCIA modem if your laptop has a PCMCIA slot to plug it into. You could also have a corrupted modem driver.
what do you mean by hook it up? Do you mean internet service?
All new laptops have Wi-Fi capabilities, but you must be in range of a free service. In order to get dedicated service, you will need to either purchase an aircard from a provider such as sprint, verizon,AT&T, or get hooked up through your local phone company(DSL), or cable service- they will provide you with the modem.
You first need to establish that you have internet available to your router via cable modem, dsl, etc. Unless your modem is also your wireless router. Take your ethernet connection or cable that resembles a large phone
cable and plug in your Acer One directly into the router. You should
then be able to get internet. If not, you may have a problem with your
internet in general and need to contact your Internet Service Provider.
Also if possible try another pc, see if it has internet. Lastly try
reinstalling wireless diver in device manager.
