Get the latest driver from Canon's web site. Then uninstall the printer. Remove the driver from your computer. Use regedit to remove any traces of your printer from your registry. Install the new driver. That should do it.
if it is a new black ink cartridge and the printer still wont print black start by:
A: Simply making sure the settings are ok. To do this, go to file>print. When the printer box shows up. click properties.
From there, you will be able to see color settings. (ex. black, grayscale, full color.) Try switching to black or "use black cartridge only.
B. If "a" does not work for you, the print head which hold the ink cartridge is clogged or no longer working. Through the cannon window on the printer, try running a print head cleaning or any maintenance program.
If there's still no black, the print head has seen better days and needs replacing. Most of the time it is more effective to get a new printer.
I suggest you try to reset the printer. remove the cartridges before starting these steps.

Sounds like most of the color lines (the "cables" between print head and cartridges) either have clogged ink in them, or air bubbles. Try the cleaning process found by pressing Ink Management and then Menu/Set twice. After the test print sheet is printed, answer the question(s) in the display and print up to five test prints by answering the questions. It should solve the problem, but if it doesn't, you should perform a heavier duty purge found in the service mode.
Insert a genuine black cartridge (if you are not already using one).
This worked for me on a C6180 printer
1.Try placing sheet of black text on copy board, and run many copies black only. I ran 25x12 times still no black. Run head clean after about each 50 sheets. Persevered and finally BLACK ink OK
This could be to several reasons: 1# The black cart contains blue ink-> Change to a brand new cart.
2# The cart assy has a bottom that is a foil. Sometimes this foil leaks. Ink will mingle: You need a new cart assy.
Run the cleaning cycle twice after inserting a brand new bk ink cart and print out a test print. If you still see blue instead of bk the assy is leaking. BTW the bk is darker than blue (or better cyan). You must see bk! So it seems to be the prob with the right ink....
Check if cartridge is in good position by reinserting. Do use a new original brother ink cartridge for that!!!
Press menu then start mono (blue button). Then arrow-up button fourtimes.
Machine will be in maintenance modus.
press 7 then 6 : display will be cleaning_all.
Press 3: power_p all.
Press start mono.
Machine starts power cleaning.
After cleaning when maintanance is in display again press 0 (zero) then 9. machine prints test sheet. If its ok press 9 then 9 to leave the maintenance modus. If not do procedur mentioned above. If you dont see any bk the printhead has dryed out and cant be fixed anymore.
