Scanner unit does not find home position . Its kinda jittery , well it did hav a ink spill so i cleaned all i cud in a strip down. the main board did not seem affected so i take it it must be a home position fault on the scanner unit.
wot u think
Did that as u said But the fault seems similar to that of the HP 6110 with "scanner failure" . where is the scanner home position sensor located.it just says "failed to init" & sounds as if the scannermotor is gonna strip a gear.Did that as u said But the fault seems similar to that of the HP 6110 with "scanner failure" .

Re:
Any type moisture on a printer can cause many problems especially a malfunction and possibly destroyed your whole printer. It will need to be cleaned very well in every area of the spill. Rollers, gears, shafts, surfaces must be clean for printer to function properly.
Could possibly have to uninstall all printer software drivers and reinstall them restarting your machines.

The is a lot of help and videos in the bottom link, but this post appears to fix the issue according to Brother, and the link below that from iFixit gives an alternative solution but way more complicated..
If you are seeing vertical streaks/black lines your primary corona wire is dirty and or the fax scanner may be dirty. 1)To clean the corona wire you take the drum unit and toner cartridge and place it on disposable paper to avoid spilling. 2) Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by sliding the blue tab from right to left several times. 3) Return the blue tab and snap it into the home position. 4) Reinstall the drum unit and toner cartridge. 5) Close the front cover. Caution: if you do not return the blue tab to the home position it may repeat the black lines.
You have to open the scanner as if you were changing the cartridge.
There is a "-----;-" cover which hides the flatcable. Remove this cover
and reinsert the flat cable to the mainboard by simply sticking it into
position. May or may not work, it may have wiggled loose.
Sometimes you may see vertical streaks/black lines on the faxes you receive. Either your FAX/MFC's primary corona wire for printing may be dirty, or the sending party's fax scanner may be dirty. Clean your primary corona wire (see pages 13-18), or ask the sender to make a copy to see if the problem is with the sending machine. Cleaning the Drum Unit We recommend you place the drum unit on a drop cloth or large piece of disposable paper to avoid spilling and scattering toner. 1 Carefully turn the drum unit upside down. 2 Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the tab from right to left several times. 3 Return the tab to the Home position ( ) before reinstalling the drum unit.

Try receiving from another fax machine. If the problem continues, call Brother Customer Service at: 1-800-284-4329 (in USA) or 1-877-BROTHER (in Canada).
Several conditions may cause the error message Machine Error 30 to be displayed on the LCD. This error may be the result of one of the following:
The print head carriage is failing to return to its home position to the far right of the unit.
Both of the springs located on each side of the carriage is out of place.
The cartridge covers may not be locked securely in place.
Please follow the instructions listed below to correct this problem:
Press the INK button on the Control Panel.
Using the dial pad, press 2 (Replace Ink). The display will prompt you PLS OPEN COVER.
Pull the Scanner Cover release lever located under the Control Panel and lift the Scanner cover. The carriage should move to the left in order to replace the ink. If the carriage does not move to the left, your machine will require service.
After the carriage moves to the left, press down each cartridge cover and remove all ink cartridges from the machine. There are 2 springs located on each side of the carriage that hold the print head against the carriage assembly. They are thin silver springs approximately 64mm or 2 1/2 inches, set at an angle.
If the spring is out of place, press the spring back into place. You can use the spring on the opposite side of the carriage as a guide as to the correct position.
If the spring is not out of place, reinstall each ink cartridge.
After installing the ink cartridges, close the covers and verify they are securely locked into place. Your machine then prepares for a head cleaning and goes online. The LCD screen prompts you to verify if a new ink cartridge was inserted for each color you removed. For example, DID YOU CHANGE BLCK 1. YES 2. NO.
Press 2 (No).
Note
If you decided to place a new ink cartridge in for any of the colors when uninstalling and reinstalling the cartridges in the above process, press 1 (Yes). The machine will automatically go through a cleaning cycle.
The unit should then return to date and time. If Machine Error 30 continues to appear on the display, your unit will require service.
Open scanner cover as you would do to check for a paper jammed sheet.
Do open the plastic which runs from middle to the right side (looks like a "Z" turned clockwise). Use a small screw diver for that. beneath you will find th flat cable of the scanner. You have to reconnect the flat cable by simply sticking it into position onto the main circuit board. make sure flat cable is in good position and click the" Z "onto the channel. Close cover then power up and do what ever you want to do with your mfc ;-)
AF after cleaning cycles??????????????????????????
AF means that the scanner flatcable is not connected to the main pcb (When powering up you should hear a grinding sound from the scanner area). Open the scanner cover as for changing the ink carts. Open the small cover (looks like a " L ") and connect the white flat cable simply by pushing it into the main pcb.
We also had this problem. The solution that worked is to put the machine in maintenance and reset the scanner. Unplug the machine, put your finger on the menu key first and then re-plug the line while holding the menu key, in about 30 seconds all the lights will flash and the display will say maintenance. Release the menu Key and press 55 and this will reset the scanner; if scanner error comes up the machine will need to be serviced. Press stop and then 99 this will exit you out of maintenance. If the machine does not have an error try making a copy of blank sheet of paper and see if there is any improvement.
