Akai pth5488 54 inch rear projection television

The picture has red and green ghosts. The tv is almost 5 years old and off warranty. I checked the manual that came with the tv and tried to adjust the convergence but I have no idea what I am doing and it is not working. Someone suggested I clean the rear projection lenses and I have no idea what or where they are. Please help me.

it sounds like my 43" is doing the same thing, except it smelled like something was burning and the screen would do a fizzle effect. any ideas?

Ghosting or double picture with red and green, changed to all red. Distorted picture and wave of no picture at the top and bottom of screen. Everything else ok. Convergence menu not responding. Philips 55"...

If the convergence option is still in the on screen menu its usually related to resistors on the convergence power supply board

TV went out and will not come back on. Power light shows red but no sound or picture. It's about 4-5 years old.

Ghosting of the image

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer

Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

5 year old 60 inch WEGA just turned off itself while watching. I can not get the TV to turn back on. The Green light blinks on the front of the TV when pressing on, then the red light blinks to solid red....

Please intimate exact model of your Sony TV and also mention how many times red LED blinks.

GB4308 Ghosting

The cost I don't know, but this can be fixed. There are generally 3 lamps in projection T.V.'s, Red, Green, and Blue. They have to be aligned for the TV to project a clear picture. A credible TV repairman should be able to fix it. Depending on if it's new enough to be under warranty they may cover it as well. Really the only reason to get rid of it is if you want to get a new TV anyway. Depends on the cost of having the lamps aligned.

Ghosting in red ,blue & green

Sounds like an allinment problem with the color projection you can allin yourself via small screws on color tubes in rear. but be careful as tv needs to be on to do it.

If the ghosting is like a 3D effect its your convergence ICs , but if its like a blue Halo around objects that usually means your CRT coolant has congealed and will need replacement. The blue is the first tube to congeal for some reason, followed by green. Red seems to be not quite as prone to this. It is a normal occurrence n sets about 4 years old to need the coolant changed.
