I had the same problem and looked at several reports on the internet. Palm TX and Vista are not compatible. You need to download a software update onto your desktop and then try to synch using bluetooth.

I have a new computer with Windows 7 and it does not have a driver for syncing with the palm TX

I am sending you a link to palm and the free chat service they offer. They may be able to tell you if an update is available. I hope so as I too have a TX and am looking for a new laptop that will probably come with Windows 7.
Anyway, here is the link. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see Palm chat. From there click on the available chat now link and follow the prompts. Best wishes.

Need to move contacts in Palm Desktop to new user name

On your Palm Desktop, under username PalmUser40, select the category view of 'All'.  Then press Control + A to select all contacts. Then press Control + C to copy them all.
Then change the username on the upper right to 'misty'.  Then go to contacts, under category 'All', and then Control + P to paste all contacts.
This will most likely not keep all the category names, but all your contacts will be copied in.
Then hotsync to sync to your Palm TX.

Can't open palm pilot IIIxe on computer (Vista)

VIsta does not support your early generation Palm Pilot.

It barely supports the current TX but there are workarounds.
Hope you kept your old computer for a backup. :+) but its understandable if you didn't.

They recently released a more stable version but plenty of users still have difficulty. The workaround is to load files for any third party product (docs, videos, images) via the SD memory card.Users reported they could update via bluetooth or wi-fi for the Palm's own software. However, this is not an option for your model.

Later models with an SD card option still have to be initialized and prepared for the Palm from an older XP computer first. It's a workaround, not a match. I'm not up to date so users may have a stable sync system/method now with Vista. Check the forums.

Your model does not have an SD option this as it is an early generation model. You may continue to run this older model on older computers.

I am not recommending you buy a new personal device until you research on Brighthand and other user forums. Take advantage of other peoples experiences re: Vista. It will save you a lot of grief and help you decide when and whether to upgrade.

from Wicki and product info:
The first two generations of PDAs from Palm were referred to as "PalmPilots" which upgraded to external memory slots and firmware-upgradeable flash memory after the Palm III series.
The next versions of Palm used Palm OS 3.1. These included Palm IIIx with 4 Megabytes of memory. Compare this to the TX which has 128 MB of non-volatile storage and current OS of 5.4.

The TX released in October of 2005, as part of Palm's Fall 2005 product cycle. It features 802.11b, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. It was priced at $299. It runs Garnet, version 5.4.9. It largely replaced the earlier, costlier T5. <In my experience, It usually runs as low as $200 during Black Friday (Thanksgiving time). With discounts and indirect rebates, it can go as low as $150. FYI, With the move to Smartphones, this model will not have continued development from the company. >

On top is a slot for SD expansion cards. The slot is also SDIO and MMC compatible. 2 GB cards are usable directly.
<in my research, Only SD, not SD HC (high capacity) cards are compatible. 4GB SD only cards are difficult to find now that SDHC are the norm. It's not a issue for me since those also use more power. 2GBs can be had as low as $6 with creative dealing.>
