I have the same model, What could be going wrong is your Power Callibration for the Laser might be off (Look on Youtube for Repairs on how to fix this) The site is : www.youtube.com Search "PS2 Repairs" :)

hello .this could be a laser problem .most of the blue discs are cd based .silver can be cd or dvd . do you know how to pull it apart .also what version is it .the waqy to tell is by model no,and the amount of screws in bottom case.8 or 10
JoTex.. The PS2 wont play blueray disks ..most of the older ps2 games have a purple or almost black color..Try checking the games to see if they are damaged, such as finger prints large scratches ect, try a dvd lens cleaner they are pretty cheep.(the disc type). the lens my be dirty,, or you can use a can of compressed air like the type for your keyboard. just spray inside with the disk tray open..hope this helps
What you probably have is a disc read error, if you don't want to get a new system first you can always open it and repair yourself but that voids the warranty but is voided after the 30th day, I have tried it a few times in the past and it works but is time consuming and if your not careful you can break it beyond use. But if you're brave read this article. http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars
The Blue back disc is CD format. The DVD laser circuit is giving you trouble. You can adjust the DVD pot some on the back of the Laser. Turn it about 3 degrees clockwise. Then put it the laser back in. Test the PS2 with no cover on, and use the white round disc from the laser drive cover to clamp a disc onto the spindle. Test DVD and PS2 Games that do not have Blue back.
After extensive research on this subject and working on several Playstation II systems. I found out the reason your system will play only blue disks and not silver is a alignment problem with the laser. It could be tilted or set to high or low. The quickest solution is to call Sony and get a new laser with the shuttle.
If i am not mistaken it cost 50.00 and just go to the playstation site select support and it will explain in full detail how to take your system apart and replace the laser and shuttle.
Is this a new problem or has your PS2 always had this issue?
You cannot adjust the laser at all and are likely to damage it if you try, you can however clean the laser lens with a CD/DVD cleaning disk and you'd be surprised how often this resolves disk read issues.
Some of these units did have a production fault that prevented them from reading DVD's, if your PS2 has had this fault since new and/or is under 12 months old you could probably have had it repaired/replaced by Sony but by opening it you will have invalidated you're warranty.
oh almost forgot. He has the older BIG ps2 i think it's a 50001/n model
