I always used by Kirby as an upright or along with attachments. How do I remove the handle to use it as a cannister vacuum for the stairs? I just moved to a 2 story house and need to power on the stair carpet that I cannot get with the zip brush.

The bag is left where it is. The hose goes on the front of the vacuum after removing the nozzle. See the How to Attach the Hose instruction video on the below site.
you can turn your Kirby into a handheld by removing the handle (button down on the bottom) if it came with all the attachments. Take the big handle off attach the small one onto it and you can take it and clean your couches, bed, stairs, etc. had mine for twelve years never had a problem with it.
HERE is the manual When rating my solution rate the clarity of the explanation NOT whatever you like Kirby stair shampoo system. I do not believe this is the way to shampoo either but this is not me who designed it. Will get the job done but it is a lot of scrubbing and rubbing.
http://geeksquad.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=11557&thid=579274 How do I attach and use the shampooing attachment... Posted by rottylvr on May 08, 2008 I have a Kirby Vacuum and Carpet Cleaner that I know how to use, all except the attachment that I am not sure about. I am not sure if it is a vacuuming attachment or can I attach it and use it to clean my couch, I do not have the user guide for my vacuum as I got it from my son's ex girlfriend in lieu of money she owed me. It looks like it should be used for shampooing things like stairs and furniture, but for the life of me I cannot figure it out! Can you please help me? Tell me how to attach it if it is supposed to be used to clean stairs and furniture or tell me where I can find the user guide to look at and see how to use it......Oh by the way I have a 160 pound rottweiler that tries to live on my furniture and my couch is in desperate need of cleaning, this is my only day off and I have spent all day cleaning carpets due to my dog and would love to clean my couch before returning to work and putting my dog in the back yard now that it is warm enough for him to be outside all day. Thanks, Desperate to reclaim her couch
Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. My suggestion is that you contact the Kirby Co in Cleveland listed below and they will instruct you either to down load a owner’s manual or they will mail one out to you, there might be a local Kirby dealer in your area that might have a manual as well. Also, there is a separate shampoo head that will be in the owner’s manual, you remove the vacuum head and bag assm and attach the shampoo head, make sure you use genuine Kirby shampoo for the carpet. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. http://kirby.com/Customer Service – United States & Canada1-800-494-8586 Hours 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (EST)U.S. & Canada Fax # 1 (216) 529-6146 Mail To: Consumer Relations The Kirby Company 1920 West 114 Street Cleveland, OH44102 Thanks, Don the Vac Man Go Ahead. There is a portable shampooer/sprayer that attaches to the hose ( the long one that makes the kirby a canister vacuum). It should have come with your attachments. Looks a bit like a gun without the tank attached to the bottom...the tank screws on.
To use it you would put the fingerguard attachment on the front of the kirby where the powerhead would normally go and the hose with the portable shampooer where the bag would go.
The tank on the portable sprayer/shampooer has lines to indicate how much water and shampoo are needed.
Be sure to put the mesh nozzle (sort of a triangular shaped thing with a piece of mesh along the front that attaches to the front of the portable sprayer) on the front of the portable sprayer if you want to shampoo..otherwise it will just spray a mist. The triangular piece with the mesh screen is what produces suds.
Vacuum the furniture/stairs thoroughly before shampooing. Cover the stairs/furniture with a thick coat of suds. Once covered with suds, pop the suds into the fabric/carpet using your hands...working the bubbles into any heavily soiled areas with a soft brush. No need to vacuum after shampooing. There is only about 10 percent water to 90 percent air in the suds.
Then let it dry. 15 minutes to and hour depending on the amount of solution used.
Hope this helps!!!
