it's possible that there need to be a adjustment to the serger or there could be a damaged or broken part in it, having it checked would be a good idea
to change how much fabric is cut you need to move the cutting blade either left or right, this overlocker is one of the first so I think this process was pretty manual, ie using a screw driver to release and reposition the right hand blade.
it may be worthwhile buying a manual for this while you still can get them, this model was released back in 1987 in UK. Instruction Manual Elna L1 Serger
Right from Brother at 1-800-276-8437 you can order it. Also, www.sewingpartsonline.com for around $7. I think that your Serger is a 1034D, are you sure that Brother didn't give you one in your accessory bag?
For now, it works only satisfactorily:
I applied alcohol to further clean both blades,
dried and then oiled them. There seemed to be a slight gap between blades;
the fabric was dragged into the gap instead of being cut.
A new set of knives may be the fix you need. Sharp knives on a serger make a world of difference. I bought a new one for ours but I think a person could put a keen edge on the old one if they so desired.
