Hi,

Subzero wants customers to call the on these, Call them and most likely they will concession the parts needed to save you some money. I see this a lot as I am a certified repair person. This you save you about 500 or so, but your question is yes, this is about right as the EPA mandates us to recover and collect the charge of freon. The disposal fee and equipment is what makes the rate higher on any refrigerator not just yours.

Original warranty was 12 years parts, I am sure they will help if your using a certified servicer.

Good Luck

Was able to get an Authorized Subzero company here this morning with NO emergency service charge. Turns out the fan needs to be replaced and it also needed freon.

SOURCE: Won't stay cold...

If the compressor is shot, then there is not any reason to keep it. The parts and labor will cost you as much as a new fridge and then at that is not guarnteed to work correctly after the job is finished, or how long it will last afterwards

SOURCE: Compressor area above refrigerator is getting very hot

Hi,

Check Thermostat.
Proper Cleaning/Defrosting of fridge and freezer.
Proper Placing and Distance from wall.
If your hand bear the body temperature of that specific area then its normal.
Contact technician to verify Freon pressure.

Best of Luck,

Insulation breakdown

Hi.

I have not seen a subzero unit that could not be repaired, even thirty years old unit can be repaired. With that being said, I would call subzero directly to ask for a certified servicer in your area to take care of your unit. Here is a link for their website to help you Contact and Support they will get you a person knowledgeable to correct your issue. FYI not everyone can work on SubZero unit. This unit if 12 1/2 years old is just a teenager to this manufacture, no worries. They can last over 30 years, I have seen them and repaired them.
I am here if you need help in SoCal.

How difficult is it to replace a subzero 650 compressor?

With E.P.A. laws, of you do not have the equipment, I would donate the unit for a great tax break. Any unit that is over 10 years old, always replace to a higher energy effiecient unit. It will pay for it self in a few years, just off the money you saved. If the unit is only a few years old, the new compressor will run $120-$175, plus a coupple hundred for labor.

Need a replacement compressor < 8 " high for older refrigerator

How can you have a R134a Compressor that is 32 years old. That gas was not even available then. What you are asking is impossible, unless you are asking can you change from possibly R12 to R143a. The answer is yes but it would probably be too costly. you see R12 ran with mineral oil whereas R134a runs with Polyolester oil. the system would have to be completely flushed out of old oil, and the expansion device ( capilliary tube ), would have to be changed and cut to the correct length to appropriate the correct displacement of gas.

Have a subzero set - fridge and freezer. The

First, check the compressor fan. Make sure it is turning. If this fan is not working properly, the refrigerant will be be cooled adequately. This lowers the efficiency of the refrigerator and causes it to run more.

The fan is probably located in the back of the bottom of the refrigerator. It pulls air across the coils and blows the heat out the back of the unit.

If the fan is not turning, the fan motor will need to be replaced.

Freezer Compressor Leaks Oil and Stopped Working

Hi I'm a subzero asc (Autorized service center) Subzero would not be responsible, your unit is out of there warranty. Now if the service company your dealing with is any good they can get a new compressor under a part warranty from there part distributor. Also in my many years working on subzero I have never seen oil dripping from the compressor unless you have a leak somewhere in the sealed system. Unfortunately the only thing you can do is see if your service provider will fix the unit. they will charge you labor if they get the part in warranty. It's possible that the service provider did not to the job properly but that's your word against there's. Good luck I hope everything works out for you..

To answer your question it would require several questions to be answered but as a general rule $300.00 + Compressor would be a start point for me HERE.
To Check your compressor:
Either your compressor is broken inside or the start components are not working properly. Ohm the compressor terminals to ground and across to each other.

If any read anything to ground the compressor is bad.
Your readings between the compressor terminals should all be different and you should have 1 low 1 medium and 1 high resistance reading.
Add the low and mid reading together and the sum should be close to the highest reading. If it reads say 20% more or less then retest it a couple of times to confirm your not slipping on the terminals.
Assuming the above checks out: Get a new Start relay (start capacitor if so equipped) relay and overload (and capacitor if it has one) In other words everything that is external and attached to the wires or terminals on the compressor, and replace them on to the compressor. Then if it starts problem solved if it still does same thing the compressor is bad (broken mechanically inside the compressor) and you have to decide to replace compressor or replace the refrigerating compressor be it AC or Refrigeration.
.
A few times I have gotten a compressor to start after leaving it off for 6 to 12 hours then retrying it. See the compressor unless left off for 6 to 12 hours and sometimes as long as 24 hours Is tight due to linear expansion from heat. And about 1/2 the time it is ok after new start components are installed. The other 1/2 the compressor will be ok for a day or 2 then stop again. Most likely from a “hard spot” in the movement of the internal parts in the compressor.

30 years of doing refrigeration and this has not changed.
Please rate me as high as you can and ask me to clarify anything you don’t understand.

Subzero Model 550, freezer not working properly

Blow out the condenser with an air compressor. Make sure the evaporator coil is not frosted up, if so, the drawer may naot have been closed properly, or you may have a defrost problem, (timer, terminator, etc). Possible freon leak in the high side drain loop. Compressor may not be pumping efficiently, could have a bad condenser fan motor.
