Question about Sanyo DRW-500 DVD Recorder

1 Answer

Finalizing disc I had a Sanyo DRW500. I recorded shows on DVD+R and didn't finalize my discs afterwards. I no longer have the unit but own a Magnavox VCR/DVD recorder. It will not play my discs. My manual states that it will read +R discs. Is it because I didn't finalize the discs afterwards? If this is the problem, would I be able to finalize them if I was to purchase the same unit again? Or can they be finalized on the unit I have now and if possible, how do I do this.

Try finalizing on the unit you have now. or find some one with a Magnavox to do it on or even a PC

CAN RECORD FROM VCR TO DVD+R, CAN PLAY DVD ON SAME, BUT CANNOT PLAY ON OTHER DISC PLAYERS. I THINK THAT THIS IS BECAUSE I AM NOT FINALIZING CORRECTLY. WHEN AND HOW DO I FINALIZE A NEWLY RECORDED DISC?...

Usually you finalize the disc after loading it with all the desired content (leaving a bit of space for the finalization). So if you are recording a TV show, depending on the setting (SP, LP, XP), you might finalize the disc after recording 4 1/2 shows. The How may vary by model but on my DVD recorder, I find the finalize command in the same menu area as adding a title and initializing a DVD-RW disc. So I press Setup to enter the OSD menu, then go down to Disc (looks like an optical disc) then right arrow to enter the sub menu. Then press down to Disc Finalize and the right arrow again and press enter. Select OK and Enter again. (RW discs can be unfinalized to add more content.) Then wait until the process is done.

I hope this helps.

Finalizing

Use a name-brand DVD, such as HP, Verbatim, etc. and make sure it is a DVD+R or DVD-RW/-R disk only.
It is most likely that the DVD you are using is not compatible.
The disk is still usable, but you can only read it on that player.

Magnavox DVD recorder...finalizing problem

The manual isn't too helpful either - "Recording error other than below," it says. There are a couple of possibilities. The Philips/Magnavox/Funai recorders automatically record in VR mode when you use +R discs (there are two possible recording modes - V Mode and VR Mode). Is it possible that you have switched disc types lately? If you are currently using -R discs, switch to +R and vice versa. The manual states that +/-RW discs take a while to initialize.

I couldn't find a full factory reset on that one, so you may have to unplug the unit for about 20 minutes to restore all the defaults.

Another possibility: Finalization requires some extra space on the disc. If you accidentally pressed the button that changes the recording format between SP, EP, LP, etc., you may not be able to fit the same amount of video on the disc that you were able to fit before. You can change the format by pressing the Disc Mode button on the remote - LP Mode will fit 3 hours worth of recordings onto a 2-hr disc and is considered a "medium quality" recording. Try changing the Disc Mode to LP and see if it will finalize the next disc that you record. The downside of this possibility is that the discs that you have already made that are giving you errors are not "fixable" - you will will have to re-record the shows to a new disc in LP mode.

Good luck!

Finalizing

-R and +R auto-finalize, only +RW and -RW require manual finalization - if the option is no longer available, it is because the discs are already considered finalized by the player. If the disc edit option is greyed out, and you cannot play the discs in another player, then the recorder will need to be replaced b/c it is consistently producing bad recordings. Try unplugging and replugging the recorder once just to be sure it isn't a temporary problem.

Recordes but dont play back

before you can watch a recorded DVD on another DVD player you must finalize the disc. to finalize the disc put the recorded disc into the DVD recorder, when the DVD loads it will show the titles that are recorded on the DVD on the screen
push the stop button it is the button with the square on it. the screen will go blank or it may let you watch whatever tv channel you are on if you have your tv ran through the recorder, push the setup buton a new screen will come up, with the arrow down button scroll down and highlight disc edit, press ok another screen will come up, with the arrow down button scroll down and highlight "finalize", press "ok" it is the button in the middle of the arrow keys
scroll up and highlight "yes" press "ok" the recorder will finalize the disc and it can be watched on any DVD player, just remember when you finalize a disc you cannot add anything else to the disc.

Finalizing

All units are different but you'll insert the disc to be finalized,
go into your disc menu, edit disc and you should see a finalize disc.

The disc will finalize (this usually takes a few minutes).
You will no longer be able to record on this disc so make sure you are finished with it!
If the disc is not finalized, you will not be able to play it in any DVD player other than the one you recorded it in!

I know it's not step by step but I hope this helps :)

My recorder gets stuck while finalizing. It always stops at 60%

Personally, I would try to exchange it. I have had this unit for a while now, and it has never taken longer than 4- 5 minutes to finalize a disc.
