Michael, I'm thinking from your post that this is a standard 1/4" "Phono Plug" - a super common connection for audio gear of all sorts. The crackling sound is from the connection between the plug and the jack (being broken) and the amplifier amplifying the moments it connects and disconnects. If there were more power running through it like a high voltage, you'd could actually see with your eyes what is happening, but in this case, low power, we use our ears.
SO- Those input jacks are readily available at parts stores. You'll see that you can unscrew an input jack from the socket or hole it's in and replace it, connecting it all together again with a soldering iron.
If the plug itself is cracked (its plastic, right) and the wires are not connected internally, same deal. You can get that part all over and do the same thing. Connects the two wires the same way to the new one as they are in the old one.
Get used to this problem.....these input phono plugs and input jacks get damaged easily and often. There are better connections like XLR and others that won't break as often and actually lock onto the case, but with what you have, care, caution and an occasional fix are part of life.
