This is a very simple creda machine, about 17 years old. It has a problem that is driving me crazy. Essentially, it won't agitate the clothes. It will fill with water (but only about 1/5 or 1/4 of the drum fills), and will spin properly at the end of the wash cycle, with or without clothes in it. IF there are NO CLOTHES but only water, it agitates correctly. But if there ARE clothes, it moves back and forth just barely. There appears to be no problem with the belt. If the motor is defective, why would it spin fully at the end of the cycle, even with clothes in it? Why would it agitate with only water in it, but not clothes AND water?
Thanks in advance.

It's a whirlpool top load and 17 years
old. I checked the lid switch, water level switch and they
are okay. I replaced the motor coupling. The old one was chewed up and
crumbling. When I put everything back together and turned
it on to check if it would spin, I heard a buzzing sound and after a few minutes
there was a burning smell. What should I check to diagnose
this problem? would help to have make or model numbers to show age of machine
This machine has a variable spin-speed setting. You can set the spin-speed RPM (between OFF and 1200RPM) using the smaller dial located next to the main wash programme selector dial.
I hope I'm not stating the obvious, but appliance "faults" are often simple and don't require taking the machine apart or calling a service engineer. If you've already tried the above suggestion and your washing machine is still spinning slowly, please post back and I will try to assist you further.
If the m/c completed the wash cycle, it may be that the clothes have not rinsed, or incorrect prog selected, or incorrect temp selected,
Check to see if the drum actually goes round with clothes in, as a worn or broken belt will obviously stop the clothes from being washed.
Plz rate my solution.
try your carbon brushes and drop your sump ie the pipe that connects to the pump on the inside of the machine and goes to the bottom of the drum this is the sump that sometimes blocks or may be a weak pump but try the other 2 options first good luck dont forget to unplug
