Most of the documents I print are letter size. If I send a letter size document to the printer it will not begin printing until I physically go to the printer and hit the green start button. If it is a legal document it will begin printing automatically to the legal paper tray.
Obviosly your magazine (Place of taking paper) of the printer is set to legal. The lights is lighting, couse the printer is telling you: You want me to print on letter, but I don have any letter, so please confirm that you want me to print on legal.
In order to avoid this set the printer to all types of paper available.

This will most likely be the in the menu on the printer. Refer to the users manual and how to access those setting.

You should configure TRAY 1 as Legal only.
and Tray 2 as plain letter.
Specially when you specify from what tray/paper type to print.
This can be easily configured from the Printer Properties within the Printers and Faxes section of the Control Panel.

sounds like you're dealing with Postscript issues here. Does your HP have postscript drivers installed.

Problem may be the paper tray. You don't say what kind of printer you have and my psychic abilities are nil.
The paper tray has sensors that tell the printer what size paper is in the tray. Make sure that the tray guides are set correctly.
By the way all paper trays are "in" trays.
Print out a config sheet to see what size paper the printer is set up for for each tray.
