I tried to adjust the convergence on my TV. I can move the blue horizontallly and vertically but I can only move the red vertically.
Do I need to slap the TV on the side to make it move horizontally or should I take it to a service person because I don't know how to use any equipment to fix my TV. Please help!!!

I've had the same JVC issue.  Red only goes up and down, blue lines up no problem.  Also if I move the middles ones (3,6,9) they all move!  Is there no simple way to fix this?  I see the technical fix, but it sure looks complicated, and the $300 fix doesn't work for my mom living on SS and me as well being a single mom/widow on SS.  Know what I mean???  Is there any other solution??  This tv is only 3 years old!

I am ordering IC's myself today and will report back. I hope to hell this fixes this 1800dollar tv. You guys are the best!

Exact same problem!  The red moves only up and down, and it's impossible to line all the crosses up.  I'm going to contact JVC, and see what I find out.  Jag - keep me posted on your progress, I'll post back if I find anything out.  I did recently switch to Direct TV - think that has anything to do with it?

Well, gang. I changed out my two IC's. The picture got a "little" better. Turns out, there is another one of these ic's in the tv. I took it to a local repairman. He was most impressed I changed both of the two chips. Had I known there was a third, I would have done that one too. Either way, I was out the door at the shop for 120bucks because he changed the third chip and adjusted the picture. Now the TV looks as good as it did when it was new. I decided to keep it after all.

So, Be on the lookout for this chip. Search inside your box and see how many of them you can count. I think it has 3 or 4 total. Change them ALL just because the heat kills them and they are cheap and easy to replace.
Hope this helps someone out there. You guys were a BIG help and saved me tons of money and I learned a thing or two along the way.
    Best wishes in '09

    Jason

Your TV most likely a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This isJVC 56wp30 convergence - 0667c5f.pngroblem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Turns out there is a third IC chip. A local repairman told me about it and he changed it. If you change these because they will die due to heat, search your tv and changed everyone you find. They are cheap and easy to change.

My picture now looks brand new. Thanks for your help gang. NICE JOB!

My JVC AV-56WP74 is showing green and purple waves at the top of the screen what is defective?

Common problems with the chassis used in this model for complaints such as this are caused by damage in the convergence circuitry (since there are three separate picture tubes, each mounted in a physical location different from the others, the light each tube "throws" on the screen falls in a different physical location on the screen; the electronics of the convergence circutry force the red & blue light information to "converge" on the image produced by the green tube, which being physically located in the center of the other two is the "master" image), usually associated with the IC's used as amplifiers for the convergence circuits (this model uses STK392-110's) and with the high-wattage, low ohmage resistors used as biasing components for these amps

AV-56WP30 not allowing me to access convergence menu

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit wiith instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms
  • Screen Looks 3-D
  • Colors wont align
  • Screen may look distorted or warped
  • No Audio/Video - makes a chirping sound.
Problem #2

Another common problem is dull or washed out video.
Your TV may have one or more of the following symptoms....
  • Dull looking picture
  • White looking picture
  • Halos around objects
  • Red/Orange looking picture

Jvc 56wp30

1st guess is bad convergence ic-either IC804 or IC805. Both are part #STK392-110. May be bad connections in convergence circuit, or open resistor(s) As for too much green, not sure, shouldn't be because of convergenece circuit, possibly green CRT screen voltage needs adjustment.
