Maytag Neptune MAH5500B Front Load Washer Logo

Question about Maytag Neptune MAH5500B Front Load Washer

1 Answer

Door lock My front loader is 3 yrs old...I experienced the FL "failed to lock" signal and paused, opened door a couple of times and it eventually started...at end of cycle the signal was DL "door lock" I had to unplug for two minutes to get it to unlock. I started new load and the washer starts to fill and the door never locks...my machine has a little water sitting in it and I cannot get it to lock and run. It appears the door lock or message to lock door is bad. Can anyone help?

Run a diagnostic on the door lock system; To place the unit in "service mode", close the door completely then press and hold both the "Delicates" and "Heavy Soils" keys for three seconds. Motor speed will be displayed. Press "rinse" to access the main board output function. Then press "max extract"... this is the test for the door lock. Did it lock? To exit, press "max extract" again and then both "Delicates" and "Heavy Soils" for three seconds. VOLTAGE TESTS AHEAD!!! IF YOU AREN'T SURE YOU CAN DO IT, THEN DON'T! CALL A PROFESSIONAL! If the door did not lock, you'll need a voltmeter and an hour or so. Open the door, remove the screws holding the door hinges, then remove the 2 screws (and shims) opposite the door hinges and close the door (do not take it off). Then grasp the front panel at the top near where it meets the top panel and pull toward you quickly. Lean it forward and remove it from the 2 clips at the bottom. Just below the top panel, now exposed, are the top panel retainers... use a 5/16" to remove the one screw on both sides and remove the retainer clips. Now lift the top panel up just like the hood of a car. You can now see the door latch assy. Remove the 2 wires on the solenoid and insert your meter probes into each one of them (color doesn't matter). Set your meter to read AC Voltage, then re-enter "Service Mode" and follow the steps to door lock test. When you hit the "Max Extract" key, 120 volts should be sent to the meter. If you get 120 volts, your latch assy. has failed and should be replaced. If you don't get 120 volts, your control board output has failed and needs to be replaced. Hope this helps.

Started squeaking when washing ( 3 yrs old)

Bearings squeak, rollers that help rotation of the drum squeak, then lock up, and are eventually worn down by the rotating drum. If a front loader, removing the front door panel should let you see the coaster wheels that support the front of the drum. Maybe a little oil there would help.

I can't open the door on my front loader

If you take to top off and look down where the door lock is there will be a circular plunger on the bottom. pull it down and you can manually unlock the door.

FL code on Washer

FL is a door lock code. open the soap dispenser door, and find the thin flourescent green, or bright red color nylon cord located in the front left or right areas of the dispenser area, this will allow you to manually release the door lock. Empty the washer, close the door and perform another drain and spin cycle, if the door lock still fails, you may need to have the door lock assy replaced, especially if the door lock is making a click, or buzzing soung like it wants to operate, if it's completely quiet than you may need the board replaced...Pleazer Appliance...

I have a maytag netune front loader washer- 10 years old. It is giving me an message FL when I go to start it. I can turn it off and try again and it will work fine. Am I headed for bigger problem?

The "FL" is indicating that the door has failed to lock or it locked but the control does not sense the door has locked.

It could be caused by:

  • faulty door lock solenoid
  • loose wire connection
  • faulty door lock switch
  • faulty door lock sense switch
  • bad control board

Here is a link to the manual for your machine also.

untitled-rq2y3fnvghvfrpvxa33jafnd-5-1.jpg After turn and choose cycle by program switch, press the Start / Pause button otherwise the program will not start.
If you did everything right then the "Cd" should appear on the display, which means door lock failure.

green = The door can be opened
av = The door can not be opened at the moment
red = Door is open

Washer won't start, stopped at beginning of cycle and the door lock flashed. after about 5-6 flashes the display read: FL. Tryed to start again, unplugged it for a while several times. nothing happens....

FL:
Failed to lock.

Trigger:
Door lock monitor switch in door lock mechanism unable to communicate to control board the door is locked.

Action to be taken:
1.Check wire connections in harness leading from machine control board to door lock mechanism.
2.Check solenoid and door lock enable switch in door lock mechanism.
3.Replace responsible component.

If you need to open the door.
Maytag's Neptune washer has a latch and lock on the door. If this lock fails to open when the cycle is finished. You can rescue your clothes by:
1) Remove the bezel from the soap/bleach/fabric softener dispenser.
neptopbezel.jpg 2) Locate the red cord near the right front corner of the dispenser opening. Pull on this red cord. This will unlatch the door so you can rescue your laundry. Then call for service.
