The fill watertank message appears when the tank is not even half empty. Sometimes I have problems getting the message to dissapear even when refilling tank, thus rendering the machine inoperational.
The black thing floating in the water tank is a plastic shell with a magnet inside. If you clean it...make sure you reinstall it with the tapered (smaller) side down. There is a slight size difference BUT it will make ALL the difference in the world.
I had no idea there was a magnet in that black/greyish case. The direction of the casing is important.
I had the same problem and that solved it!

Mine had a round disc for the magnet float. The magnet was in the center, glued or pressed in, with a round plastic plug to seal it. The seal didn't work and half the magnet had corroded away, reducing the magnetic strength needed to trip the sensor. I removed the plug, scraped out as much of the old battery as possible, inserted a round 7 mm x 2 mm thick magnet (no glue needed), and covered the new magnet with a bicycle tube patch to seal it.

You don't need to remove the magnet float from its chamber to clean it. The magnet float may simply become stuck or may not move freely in its chamber due to a buildup of residue or foreign material in the chamber. Remove the water tank and empty it. Clean the magnet float chamber and the magnet float gently with warm water and dishwashing liquid, moving the float up and down the chamber. Ensure you rinse thoroughly following procedure. Fill water tank again with cold water and replace into machine.

1 of 2 things.
1. There is something wrong with your water tank magnet.
2. Your water tank sensor is malfunctioning.
Many Miele parts are the same as Saeco's:

Magnet was not being held in place due to missing cap. Magnet and cap ordered and replaced from www.cerinicoffee.com. works fine now.
