Alkaline batteries are not capable of outputting the level of power required for your camera to operate. Your daughter's camera may have lower requirements and be able to function properly using alkaline batteries. Your standard alkaline battery outputs about 700 milliamps of power when they are brand new. A rechargeable NiMH battery can range from 1200 to 2700 or even 3200 milliamps max power output depending on the quality of the battery. Most compact digital cameras that accept AA style batteries are designed for these high-output rechargeables and will not function for very long even on fresh Alkaline batteries. The battery charge indicator is temperature sensitive. If you switch off and on again, do you still get the low battery warning? Have you tried with a second set of batteries - either rechargeable, or lithium or alkaline. I would do this in a warm room, and try it with new alkaline cells. You lose some of the functions, but if the indicator say charged, and you can take a shot, then the body is OK.
Call me old-fashioned, but I use a multimeter on all NEW batteries to make sure they are functional - I bought a card of cheap LR44s and the first three were either dead or low on voltage.

Chances
are that you are not using CR-V3 camera batteries in your *ist DL.
I have tried 2400mAh NiMH rechargable batteries and brand new alkaline
batteries in an attempt to save money.
Neither lasted anywhere
near as long as the CR-V3 batteries!
While you may be paying $15-$20
for two CR-V3 batteries, they last a LONG time!
One of the
advantages of DSLRs (and digital cameras in general) is that you save
money by no longer buying film and paying for developing/prints. But,
even at $20 for two CR-V3 batteries, I save money! I am able to take
several hundred photos on a pair of batteries (I think the manual says
500 ) instead of $10-$15 ($2-$7 for film $8 dev/print) for every
24-36 photos!

Hi Shipley
I get exactly the same with my *ist DL2 periodically. It doesn't happen every time but often enough to be irritating.
Sometimes taking the batteries out and putting them back in a different order fixes it - sometimes it doesn't.
Often If I put them in and then leave the camera for a few minutes before switching it on - that generally works. (but then again.......
I wish I knew the definitive answer.
