Hello. I recently bought a acer aspire 3680 laptop. Everything was working fine until today. I was just browsing around on my computer when the screen went black. The computer STILL SEEMED TO BE ON. All of the lights were lit up and the laptop was "humming" like normal. On my home computer I went to acer support, they told me it was a ac adapter problem so I took the following steps: *complete a 'power reset' of the notebook.* 1. Unplug the ac adapter. Keep ac adapter unplugged. 2. Remove the battery and keep the battery unplugged. 3. Hold the power button down for 15-20 seconds. (Nothing will appear on the display and none of the lights will light up.) 4. Release the power button and plug in the ac adapter ONLY. (Please note that a power indicator light should be lit on the ac adapter when it is plugged in). 5. Normally power on the notebook. 6. If the unit does not power on, remove the ac adapter and insert the battery into the system. 7. Plug the ac adapter back into the system, the battery charging indicator light will light up. If the battery charging indicator light does not light up, the ac adapter may not be providing proper power to the unit, and may need to be replaced. After doing all of that, the battery indicator lit up so it wasn't a problem with the ac adapter. I started up my computer, the screen was still black. If you need more information tell me... 13ideas

I have an Extensa 4420 with the black screen problem. I have been emailing with Acer technical support for two months! I have tried numerous "fixes" that they have given me (all of the above). They wanted me to do a BIOS flash, but put in a disclaimer that it might end up in product failure! I told them I wouldn't do that and that I wanted to send it in. They responded with ANOTHER fix that I'm sure won't work. I tried calling Acer, but they keep saying that customer support is not available. What to do?!
Hi, could be anything to do with video. Might be the on board video card or its memory. It is also possible that your display lost its back lite and you just can see the display. Try turning the laptop on normally and let it run for a while. Try tilting the display left right up down as if trying to gaze at the inside of the display. If you can see faint traces of your desktop then it is definitely the back lite, if none then something else is at fault. Either way you will have to bring it back for repairs or replacement. You can also try checking the memory by sliding out the panel cover at the bottom of the casing. There might be a screw or two locking the cover panel in place. Try wiggling the memory a bit, might have loosen up somehow. If still a no go, then perhaps you're really better off sending it back for repairs/replacement. Hope this works out for you. Pls post again how things turn up. Good luck and kind regards.
Hi again,
The memory might not be bad. It might just have not seated itself properly into the slot. However, if after wiggling/seating the added 512 (like what you did with the original memory) and you still have the same problem, then you would really have to return it to RadioShack. It will be to your advantage to bring your laptop along so that when they replace, you can check it the replacement memory will work properly.
Cheers.

I been going through the same problem. I purchased the Acer 3680 August 13, 2007 and I had to return to the Acer Technician three times for the same problem power outages; Today is October 8, 2007. I performed the reset power and it may power for 3 hours than it will blink out and no power. Acer will not refund me my money or replace the notebook. They want me to return it everytime the power out. The cost of the shipping and handling is getting higher and higher each time with the packing supplies and the overnight delivering.

plz try by resiting the ram, if the problem persist then you have problem in display adapter, send it to the vendor from whom you have bought

The laptop came preinstalled with 512 MB of ram, I added an additional 512 MB of RAM. When I removed the 512 MB of ram I added and wiggled the remaining preinstalled memory the computer booted up fine. Thanks for your advice!
Does this mean that the ram I bought was "bad"?
If so I am going to take it back to radioshack.
THANKS A LOT,

RadioShack completely worked out the problem, they gave me a new laptop for my old one. I also got a new memory chip. Thanks for all of your help... 13ideas
