If the laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and gradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR The battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced. Rechargeable batteries will fail if stored in a discharged state for long periods.

New Computer Shuts Itself Down

Call DELL support. Doesn't sound normal. There is Standby and Hibernate modes; neither of which would require you to unplug and plug-in the power cord in order to start the machine.

Dell support will have you run the Dell diagnostic at startup which will detect hardware problems. Or you could run it without calling...

Unplug power and remove battery
Press and hold power button 20 seconds
Replace battery, plug power cord in
Hold down the "Fn" key (to left of space bar)
Turn power button on while still holding Fn key
When diagnostics begins, let go of Fun key
Note any errors; let Dell know your findings

Monitor works fine until the sleep mode and then it goes blank. I have to unplug the power button and it does work again

It seems it is a motherboard battery problem. It most likely is not the monitor which is in "sleep mode", it is the computer itself.

When you cannot get a computer out of "sleep mode" by any other means, typically the cause is that the button-cell-type battery of your computer, which is located on the motherboard, is empty. When your computer detects this battery is empty, it goes into a low-power mode. The solution is to replace the button-cell battery on the motherboard of your computer

The power supply to my c640 has a green light that flashes when plugged into the laptop, if i unplug it from the laptop, the light stays steady and green, do i have aproblem, the laptop will not power up...

Is the battery charging when you plug the power supply? If not, while the battery and the power supply is plugged in go to BIOS, that will be F2 when your computer boots up, from there check on battery health or battery info you will also see the ac adapter if it's detected if it says unknown try to use another ac adapter if it is detected still try to use another adapter. If you still have the same problem after trying a new one. You'll need to replace the motherboard

Battery will not charge. Need info on how Latitude D830 works plz

You would need to get that part sodered, usually the charging parts or contacts on the laptop are sodered onto the power supply which is in turn sodered onto the mobo. Try cleaning the contacts inside the case as well as where the battery is.

Dell C800 Laptop dies when unplugged

Check the pins that connects the computer to the battery. Something might be bent and wouldn't make contact with the battery. Turn the system on with both the battery and ac adapter plugged in. Press F12 on the Dell splash screen. Go to Page 4 (press ALT-P to move to pages). Check if the battery is detected. If not then the motherboard needs to be replaced.

You can contact Dell Spare Parts dept: 1-800-357-3355. Just give them the service tag of the system so they'll know the part number of the motherboard.
